If someone’s pre-employment screening/background check comes back showing two SSN’s, what does that mean?

I just got hired for a new job in a health club. But they said they will do a background check. Will they be able to find out that I had a felony from another state?

I have been offered employment at what I consider my dream Job. This employer has the standard application, which asks a difficult question regarding background and misdemeanor and or felony possession. I have a misdemeanor of moral interpitude, which I am not proud of; never the less it is a blemish.

My dilemma is a catch 22 of sorts. If I disclose my background, I hurt my chances to further negotiations. If I choose not to disclose it is considered a lie and I can be let go if a background check comes back negative.

Here is the question, how can I best address this issue and keep my head up high??

Hello everyone, I have a question, I have a finger printing and background check that needs to be done in order for me to get my Teller job with a bank, Now when I was 13, I was put in Juvenile Hall for violating my probation because I got in a school fight and didn’t report to my probation officer. They took my prints, and The record was supposed to be sealed thereafter, Now I’m 20 years old, my past is behind me, but will it catch up to me for this job?

So, a couple of years ago, I plead guilty to a charge of "unlawful possession of marijuana" in new york state. I was caught again (dumb youthful choices on my part, I know) and this time it was reduced to "disorderly conduct." Both are non-criminal offenses (violations…less than a misdemeanor. the infractions are in the same category as traffic violations).

Now, I may be looking to get a government job in the next couple of years (biostatistics). Could this hurt (eliminate?) my chances of ever working for the government? Or even any private company anywhere?

Now I know that if someone were to ask me "have you ever been convicted of a crime?" I can truthfully answer "no I have not" though could these things show up and cause red flags on a background check and prevent me from obtaining a good job, whether it be for the government or anywhere else?
I was over 18 at the time this happened.

I know the record won’t disappear. What I’m really concerned about is how much this may affect my "employability" in general. Would it be possible and/or likely an employer could offer me a job and then revoke the offer because 5 or 6 years ago I had a couple arrests related to marijuana possession?
Possession of marijuana in New York is NOT a crime, so why would I admit to being convicted of a crime if I haven’t been?

I found a great job. Today was my first day as an intake coordinator/ administrative assistant for a local child advocacy center. I absolutely love this job. Today when I was about to leave, my supervisor gave me some paperwork to take home. New employment papers, which included the submission for a background check. Do you think that the director will understand, that I will be able to keep this wonderful job? I have to keep this job, I could always find another, but I want this. Please help!!!!!

How far back do employment temp agencies go on background checks.

This man is a highly educated person that lived out of the country for the last three years. He has returned and is looking for employment. He seemed to have achieved a lot but I still want to check on his activities before leaving the country (USA). there are many background check agencies online but not sure of any. Help. The case was dismissed and the terms of the probation were completed. I am now in the first year of the five year waiting period and am trying to get a job. On the employment application I was told that employers still look at the charge as a conviction. So would it be better to disclose it up front seeing as they will do a background check and and see the charge although it did not result in a conviction and the case was discharged or dismissed?

I recieved a letter from a prospective employer stating that there was "information in the report that would prevent them from offering me employment" and they enclosed a description of my rights under the fair credit reporting act. I just want to know how to get a copy of whatever it was they looked at so I know what is on there. Does having a "No Contest" for a felony (no contest meaning you plead neither guilty or non guilty and were never adjudicated guilty) plea affect your employment opportunities for jobs besides government jobs? (example : Home depot or an Insurance agency)

Does having a suspended driving license also affect your opportunities even for jobs that do not require you to drive?

I am a law student and have been charged with DUI (I know, not an ideal situation). I have an otherwise spotless record and am wondering the impact of a conviction on potential government employment–be it local, state, or federal. I have been accepted for an internship with the federal public defender’s office and am wondering if a conviction (or even arrest) will disqualify me. I was honest about the situation on my application form. Is a first DUI a disqualification from public sector legal employment? Thanks.

I understand that there is not specific legal statute against an employer who refuses to verify your employment, but if you were offered a job (orally), your background check came back clean and the only thing pending is for your former employer to response and verify employment, but they refuse to (boss won’t even return your emails/calls) mainly becuase you decided to leave his company and pursue a more satisfying career; can you legally sue your boss if your prospective employer takes back your oral job offer?

I had a group interview yesterday for an entry-level job (there were 6 others besides me). The interviewers liked a couple of my answers & i got a favorable impression from them. They emailed me the same day asking me to move through the application process & fill out background check and pre-employment forms. They didn’t say I got it for sure, but does it sound like it??

employment eligibility as in SS number or passport. I ran a background check on an employee and saw their ss number showed as 3 people. When pressed for a copy of SS card or passport, they resigned. Can I withhold the pay until they prove it?

I had been at a job for at least 7 years before being laid off, so I do have some job stability reflected but there are two jobs that I left after a day because it just wasn’t going to work out.

I am an engineer and productive, "law-abiding citizen" living in Atlanta. Prior to 2000 I had no criminal record. In 2000 I developed a severe mental illness. Alone, I became progressively psychotic to the point I broke the law. In 2002 I plead guilty under the First Offender program and successfully completed probation in 2004. At that point the Judge issued an order dismissing the case. Shortly after completing probation, in accordance with instructions from the DA’s office, I submitted an application for expungement at City Hall East, the arresting agency, to clear/seal my criminal record from the public (but as I understood it not law enforcement). I was supposed to be called and advised my record was cleared but never was. Regardless, a few months after filing for expungement, I went to the Fulton Co. courthouse and pulled my criminal record. It came up clear and I thought all was well.

Approximately 2 years later I applied for employment and was hired pending a criminal background check. When the employer did a comprehensive background check, my full criminal history came up. Puzzled, I again went to the Fulton Co. courthouse to pull my record, and again it came up clear. Approximately 6 months after that I again was hired conditional on a background check with the same result.

The DA’s office is of no help (don’t get me started on those incompetents). Is there anything I can do to seal my record?

I used to be an assistant manager at a private store that sold clothing, and sporting equipment. It was a small business. I worked there for 7 years. Would this show up on my background check for a new job? The company has bin long closed cause another company bought it in 2008. Will any info of this company be available to prove my employment, n held position there? Should I even leave this on my resume?

I was filling out an application for a casino and they asked me to authorize this statement:

It sounds to me like I would be opening a huge can of worms and allowing them to add a lot of confidential information to my public record. I had a couple of youthful indiscretions that did not result in convictions that I would prefer remain off my record.

There are three: Credit, Past employment, and criminal check. which ones do best buy check?

I received a great job offer from a couple that performed a post-offer background check. I was a victim of identity theft that resulted in criminal charges against my name. This happened nearly 10 years ago and I was never convicted of the crime and I was granted an expungement. The charges appeared in a background check that the third party company provided to the prospective employer. I provided them with a criminal record check from the Pennsylvania State Police stating that I have no criminal record but was told by the company they need to do additional investigation. They really want to offer me the job but corporate security hasn’t given the clearance as of yet. Can they rescind the offer if the corporate security tell them what I provided is not enough? It clearly states I do not have a criminal record so how can they hold what they found against me? I really want this job. Any serious advice is appreciated. Thank you

I have gotten a yes for employment and did a drug, license, and background check all on the same day. I have moved from another state 1/2 yr ago, so i guess the company will check on that too.

the thing is, its been 2.5 weeks already, and i didnt get a call from them. i know i got nothing to hide, i wont waste their time or my time. how long does situations like mines take? where they have to check records of 2 states for background and license, since i had a license in the other state. its for a shuttle bus driving company

But to be honest, I was tired of being frowned upon for having some short-term jobs. Employers were questioning me about not staying long enough at some jobs, I was never fired and had valid family issues for why I didn’t stay at some jobs for as long as I would have liked.

I know a background check involving criminal history would not be an issue in my case, nor ever failing a drug screen .

Every job I have ever had in my adult life has required an initial drug test, and random drug tests after that and a background check as well as a credit check. All decent companies as well as the states and federal governments require these for employment. Why do so many people complain about this part of the application process?

What are the tests the employer will perform during the background check? Ex; Criminal record/ credit checks/ drug policy/. I was terminated from employment (for not reaching the targets of the employer. Will they inform to the new employer?
How to effectively address this problem?

I was already offered the job at Fremont Bank, submitted to a drug test and everything. In my application I lied about a past job, or rather claimed that my reason for leaving was that I "sought career growth". I was informed that they will conduct a consumer report through Employee Relations, Inc. My orientation day is tomorrow, and I was offered the job 3 days ago. Would they have conducted a background check (employment verification) by now or should I still be worried? I’m scared they’ll call that past employer and find out that I was actually fired rather than voluntarily quit.

I was wondering how strict their investigation background is. I’ve never been arrested or anything like that, but I do have some other things in my background. Are they more lenient than police department background checks? and if Im totally honest with them with whatever they dig up will my chances of getting hired increase even if my background aint all that great?

I’m in the process of enlisting in the National Guard and got curious about what shows up on the background check that is conducted before you swear in at MEPS.
What I have learned so far is that the background check they do looks at education and employment verification and criminal offenses and such. I have received an offer from an insurance co as a customer svc rep in their call center. I accepted their offer and now have to pass a drug test (no problem) and a background investigation. I presume it will be a criminal record check (no problem) and employment record (no problem) but my credit isn’t great. I just started a commission only job in California selling door to door telecommunication packages It’s strange that I previously worked at a national retail chain before which I had a drug test – paid by the employer But these people now want to charge the employee – for a background check – which I seriously doubt that they really did, and for the drug test These are some big bucks for someone having to do this kind of job

Many employment applications will state upfront and in unambiguous terms that there will be a drug test and background check required for employment at the firm and requests agreement to this. This one did not. In fact there was no formal application at all. Thus, how could drug testing be illegal in California. I see references to one or both of these checks indeed being illegal in some states, but I can’t spend the time to sort through every state, etc.
Where could I find information about "California law prohibits an employer from charging an employee for a background check" – references to specific official statutes, codes, etc?

This would be my first job, but I haven’t ever heard of a company making you do this yourself. Where can I go to get my criminal background history? Can it be local? Is there a fee to obtain this? I have no history of any kind, what will this mean? If I can’t get it at a police station, and have to obtain it from online, will I get the record by friday?

My fiance is applying for a job, is a company that works with disabled children and requires for the employees to transport the children. So when they do a background check they said it includes traffic violations. My fiance got a speeding ticket at the beginning of this month and his court date is not until next month. His dad is a captain at the highway patrol in the county where we live so he said he would try and see if he could help get it reduced, but we were in another county when he got the ticket. His dad said we had to wait until the court date though. My question is, if he applies now will they see the speeding ticket on his background check since it hasn’t gone to court yet and is not on his insurance? Also, this was his first ticket, and his first time even being pulled over could someone honestly not hire someone because of a speeding ticket??

it said to list for the last 7 years. was at one place 3 years and the other for at least 8 but i forgot to list one that was inbetween these 2 that i was at for around 9 months. will this be perceived as lying?!

If he/she was to go through an employer background check would that show up?

I was a young single mother who got way in over my head with credit. In a time frame of 2001-2003, I was extremely negligent. I am much more responsible with myself now. Unfortunately, bad credit does not come off over night. I am even putting myself into a financial slump by paying off all my bad debt. To me it is worth it though! OK so Once again i was charged with possession of marijuana in 2003, i plead guilty to it and was put on felony probation for 5 years. I completed my probation in January 2009. My question is do employers who check your background look at the 2003 date (the date i was convicted) or The date i completed the probation period? This is important because if they look at 2003 it would be almost 8 years ago that i was convicted of the felony. But if they look at the 2009 date it would only be only 2 years, please let me know what u think employers look at when they look at your background check. Thanks in advance.

I pled no contest and went to a class. As part of the agreement the charge was dismissed. Should I provide this information on my background check for a job with the military?

After some gruesome interviews and real hard work, I ended up getting an offer from a big company which outsources their background checks to a third party vendor. However, there are two minor discrepancies in the dates that I gave for my background check verification. Both are off by a month. My graduation month I specified as May instead of April since my exams wound up in May but my graduation certificate shows April. Also, I was continuously employed for the last 5 years. So my first job wound up in the end of Oct and the second one started in Nov. But I accidentally specified that my first one ended in Nov and the second one started in Dec. I guess, my second employer during the background check confirmation, mentioned the correct date (Nov) as my joining date.

Do these discrepancies qualify as ‘lies’ and does that mean I would not end up working at the big company. Or are these treated as small issues and could be corrected by the company later?

I’ve had a background check done and it came back with nothing on it. I thgink it was for employment. Is there another type of backgrond check people use to check your record if you want to purchase a gun?

If charged with a misdemeanor or felony, but not yet convicted or even gone to court and your attorney is working on a plea bargain and deferred. Will this show up on a employment back ground check?

I am interviewing with a Fortune 500 company. I did pizza delivery for about a month back in May and I was terminated due to an altercation with a co-worker.

If they run a background check will that show up? Now I know they give you a form to list your previous employment, would it show up on there? Could I just leave the job off the form?

1) How precise are companies when it comes to background checks? For example, if I was off a month when I did my employment dates for a certain position, would this be considered a ‘red flag’ to denial? (I simply ask because I am not 100% certain on the timeframe, and simply entered what I had typically used in my Resume. However I am unsure whether it was that month, or the next that my employment began.)

2) Are grades a reason for people to be denied employment? I included a semester of college in my background check wherein my grades were admittedly abysmal. Could this potential destroy my chance of being hired? (I didn’t receive any kind of degree, nor did I say I did on my background check information sheet.)

3) Your Opinion::: My background information should be almost exactly accurate, my employment dates (except for the note above) should be right on, along with my competency in the areas that I explained in my Resume. My High School grades were above-average, whilst college was far below average for the semester I was in there. No criminal history either; if a company has gone this far to check my background, what are my chances of employment? ((Unless grades are a HUGE factor when employment is decided.))

I gotta say: The last five employers I’ve worked for conducted a “Background Check” on me as a condition of employment… I’m guessing that – that “background check” included by birthplace as well as legal status. Any employer that is NOT conducting a “Background Check” is willfully ignoring the law – what are your thoughts?

I am a college student from California pursuing a pharmacy career. I am interested in working in a hospital setting after I finish school. A couple years back I had a misdemeanor conviction for shoplifting (my first and last offense for the rest of my life). I have hired a lawyer and the case has been dismissed. Now with the advent of the Internet, more employers are screening applicants backgrounds than ever before. What I would like to know is how do hospitals generally conduct background checks? In other words:

1) Where do the hospitals get their investigation information from, i.e. what third-party screening vendors do hospitals use?

2) To what level and extent do hospitals examine an applicant criminal history, i.e. do they go back more than 7 or 10 years, do they look at misdemeanors, etc.?

3) Do conviction dismissals or expungements appear during the hospitals probing?

4) Have hospitals ever hire applicants with criminal records? If so, what was the nature of the offense that they considered forgivable (i.e. given a second chance)?

5) Should I disclose or lie about my dismissed conviction on a hospital job application?

6) I have heard some hospitals use "Live Scan" fingerprint services as their source for background screening. I thought only government agencies such as law enforcement maintain criminal record databases. How come the hospitals, a private sector, can gain access to them?

7) In California, does the 7-year limit of criminal disclosure law in employment background checks apply to pharmacist jobs if the conviction occurred more than 7 years ago? This is known as CA Civil Code (Consumer Credit Reporting Agencies Act) 1785.13.6.

Finally, for my situation, would I stand a chance of getting hired or be rejected if I am to apply for a hospital pharmacist position?

Any honest and accurate help or advice would be greatly appreciated since pharmacy schools are very expensive. I do not want to be burden with student loans that I am unable to pay back if I cannot get hire. Therefore, I prefer hearing from someone with experience in this area, i.e. people who have worked in the HR department for any major hospitals. Please include important details such as the location of the hospital, the laws pertaining to criminal background checks for that particular state/county/city, the ability to obtain a pharmacist license, and etc. The more relevant information that is available will allow me to make better personal decisions. I went to a interview for blockbuster and 2 days after they told me I had the job. The next week they gave me a schedule for the upcoming week. A day before I was supposed to start working they called me and said my background check didn’t come through. After about 2 weeks of calling them everyday to see if it came in they called me back and said they can not hire me due to my background check? I really don’t understand this. Is there something I can do or even talk to one of the managers about this? I do have a minor misdemeanor but I am not that same person anymore.

Being considerd for employment in Oregon and while doing my background check a prior employer was negative in saying I was not elgible for rehire. Background is I relocated from the midwest to Arizona for a management position with a paper company. Several months after employment the company went through a firing blitz & the new manager from day one was biased making comments about my age and pay and from the start I could not do anything right. He also offered to let me out of my relocation contract worth 20K + if I would quit. The employment ended for me three months later with his decision to move in another direction of team building and giving me several weeks pay after 8-9 months of employment, I was never counseled, written up or given any discipline. Now a possible employer came back saying the HR mngr said i was not rehireable. This companys policy has always been to only verify dates of employment and title. Now prospective employer feels I may have done something wrong.

What I mean is, I was using the search tool to find out about myself and my background for free, but so many websites are misleading and requires you to pay. Even typing out "free backgorund check." Some companies require that you allow them to give you a physical exam prior to offering employment. Do you feel it is a violation of your privacy? In addition they require a random drug test during your course of employment. And they will also do a background check! Is that invasive? Is it done for the safety of their work environment or simply to minimize other possible risks?

When the police department does backgrounds checks with an investigator, what do they look at when they say school-related? I know they do verifications of certificates but do they also look to see if you got in trouble (like suspended or cheated)? Could you be disqualified if they see this?

Also do they mostly check the high school or college you attended?

I filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy at the beginning of this month and last week I had an interview with a bank for a Universal Banker position. On Friday they called me and offered me the job and my salary and I accepted it. She said that they were going to do a background & employment check this week and I am supposed to start March 3. I am not a bad person, and certainly not a trouble maker, at ALL! But.. When I was 16/17 years old, I got into a bit of trouble. The most serious was underage drinking charges (one at 16, one at 18 and one at age 20) and fighting in public, which if I remember right, I had a couple under 18 and 2 after I turned 18. Other than that, I remember having a ticket for curfew violation, and some traffic tickets, nothing more. I haven’t been in ANY trouble since I turned 21. It’s been almost 10 years since I have had any trouble at all. Aside from a couple traffic tickets (not wearing a seatbelt a few years ago, that type of thing, nothing more serious).

This call center is doing an extensive background check, they told me to list anything, even speeding tickets. Wow! lol I honestly can not remember every ticket I have had in my life, and the dates. If I leave them out, will they not hire me if they find it? How far back to they look, do they go back before the 18th birthday? Am I going to NEVER be able to get a job in my life because of a few mistakes I made about 10 years ago? I’ve never had a felony, never had a charge for anything related to theft/fraud and the like. I don’t know what to think!
Oh, and I must add, the fighting in public charges all relate back to an issue I had with someone. He retaliated because he didn’t get what he wanted, and had his female friends pick fights with me, which I tried to avoid, but ended up getting into a few fights after trying hard to avoid it. I was offered a really great job, but the offer is contingent upon a pre-employment background check. I made a dumb mistake when I was 19, and received federal charges for it. Because I had never been in trouble before, I was allowed to enter pre-trial diversion. I paid a fine, and did community services, and the charges were dismissed. Will it show up in a background check? Do you think I should mention the situation to the potential employer before they do the check?

I’d like to find our how you can get as much information on a persons background when you don’t have a SS#, and you don’t want to pay someone to do it for you. This person has been divorced twice, has 2 children from different fathers, and I don’t know if they are telling me the truth. They have a hard luck story and I don’t want to be scammed. I’m falling in love with them, and want to trust them. They live almost 5 hours away, and when we get together we meet in the middle. I recently got a new job after looking for 4 months. I was finally happy and I finally started getting all my bills caught back up.

When I went into work today my boss pulled me aside and asked if there was anything on the application I lied about. I told my boss no and she said she has no choice but to terminate my employment because i failed my background check. She told me it came back saying I had a felony from 12 years ago on it.

First off I have never been arrested in my life. 12 years ago I would of just turned 18 and I did get a speeding ticket and a seatbelt ticket around that time but never anything like this.

Now after all that looking for a job and going through applications and interviews im back at square one and more pissed off than ever because its not true.

Do I have any recourse as too my options. Im more than willing to do whatever it takes to get this fixed and hopefully it can be fixed fast and get my job back.

Can I find out who gave my employer the incorrect info and sue them? Do I really have a case?

A friend of mine (really it’s a friend not me) had a car repossession on their credit report in October of 2002. Well he recently applied for a job and had a recent interview. He received a notice from Trans Union letter him know there was a background employment check that was conducted and there was one public record found (the repossession). Would that prevent him from getting a job? He has asked me if I thought they wouldn’t give him the job because of it.

Back about 6yrs ago i was drunk and got arrested for domestic charges with my GF which is now my wife. when i was arrested i was charged with 3 felony charges , when it got done in court i was charged with Assault and criminal mischief. both misdemeanors…. im in the process to have this sealed and the paperwork has been sent to the judge. 1. will they do a background check after the interview or do you think they’ve already done it?

2. does the background check consist of past employment or just criminal?

3. if i were terminated from a previous job..like 3 jobs ago, will they find out why?

I’m starting a new job on Monday, and they need me to bring in my social security card to verify my eligibility for employment and make a photocopy of it for the IRS. However, I have 2 legal names, since I have an AKA on my certificate of naturalization. The last name is the same, but the first name is slightly different. The Social Security Administration has both names on file for the same social security number, as far as I can remember, because when I got my California Driver’s License, the CA DMV requires that the name on the license and a name associated with the given SSN match. However, since my original name is still legal, they did not issue me a new card. On top of all of that, I file my taxes using the legal AKA name that isn’t on my social security card.

I’m pretty certain that when they ran a pre-employment background check, the report found both aliases. Does it matter that my social security card has my original legal name and not my AKA that I currently use? Am I going to have problems when I go in on Monday?

I recently applied for a job In the Automotive Industry ans was denied employment due to a failed background check. My question is can i be denied employment due to a misdomenor that happened when i was a Minor? I am now 21 years of age. And what about a traffic misdomenor?

I have a co-worker who wants to move in a certain income restricted apartment community. She works part time, and I’m assuming her boyfriend works full time. If they both fill out apps and put down that they are both employed, there’s a very big chance they will not get the apartment because the both of them together would make more than the restricted amount. So she put down on her application for the apartment that she’s not working. My question is, with income restricted apartments, do they do an employment background check on each applicant?

Here’s the deal…I was a heroin addict for 6 yrs. (been "clean" for 3 yrs. aside from very rare use/twice a year). During my addiction I was lucky enough to have NEVER been arrested for anything…except a misdemeanor, domestic dispute/ argument w/my sister. I was arrested, but also released same night (because I didn’t have a record).
After going to court months later, my only sentencing/punishment was to "remain in drug treatment/stay clean" because by the time I had to appear in court for the domestic dispute, I was already in treatment (which I DID finish successfully within 2 yrs. of methadone treatment).

My question is, do employment bckgrnd. checks disclose the "outcome"/sentencing of legal charges? Will this "check" show that I was required to finish drug treatment/had an opiate dependency? Sadly enough, I have a college education,always held a clerical/desk job, never had ANY legal issues (aside from this), and started using heroin at 21yrs old. I don’t want my employment opportunity to be "judged" upon my past/past medical issues (addiction is a disease, is it not). So Just how much does this background "check" disclose?

I got a job offer at Wal-Mart and now I am waiting to hear back from them after they do my background check. I have no criminal history, but I am worried because they said they check past employment, and I stretched the truth a bit about how long I worked at one place because the place went out of business. Can they tell that I did this?
The reason I said I worked longer at this place is because the place doesn’t actually exist anymore… it was a small business and it’s out of business now… so they can’t be called but can they pull up all my past W-2′s and see that I didn’t work there as long?

I want to become a police officer in a few years, but have a few questions about the background checks they conduct.

I’ve worked at a few jobs, some years ago, that I can’t remember specific dates to, would they come up in a employment background check? I don’t want to not mention them, but not knowing the correct dates could also look sketchy. If I were to pay for someone to run a background check on me, could I find out this sort of information?

And if so, can anyone recommend me an agency who could conduct a thorough background check?

It would be nice knowing this information before I even apply.

Her place of employment (a restaurant) recently started doing background checks on employees. All fine and dandy, if you are a new hire.. but they are also performing background checks on people who are employed (and long term) and have terminated some people because of the check.

Yeah, criminals shouldn’t have done the crime in the first place, I get it.. But is it alright to go retroactive on things like this. Is there no ‘grandfather clause’ to protect people.

My husband was called by a potential employer for a pre-employment meeting regarding his background check. He had previously been given the job offer, already passed the drug screening. To our astonishment he was asked about a felony, that the Company they contracted to do the check, claimed they found, said it happened in Jan of 2001, stating it was a DWI with involuntary manslaughter that he was sentenced to serve 10 years, but only served 120 days. This is absolutely FALSE!!! My husband is an engineer and was in his senior year of college. We went directly to the Criminal Clerk of Courts and obtained a official sealed copy of his criminal record & w/only 1 small misdemeanor that’s from a traffic accident for failure to stop in 1994, thats all. Hes never ever, even had a DWI.
What in the world can we do to FIX this horrifying problem?

Additional information on my case. I was never been arrested. She just went to court to file D.V against me and tried to get restraining order against me. There was no fiscal evidence nor witness. ok now I do have a background I got in trouble for a Public Intoxication and disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. I ended up spending the night in jail got out. Had to go to AA and community service and pay a fine. This was almost 5-6 yrs ago. About 2 years ago, I worked at Target and stupidly stole some calculators which came out to 0. It was a one time mistake and I was caught by the Loss Prevention Manager. Usually they would call the police on this but he has been watching me for 3 weeks before confronting me and I did not steal after that. He just made me sign a guilty admission and to pay back the amount within 6 months. I agreed to it and was terminated. I paid the fee but a year late.
Now the question is, since no police was involve and I was not taken to jail, would this show up in my job employment history? I have other jobs afterwards but none ask for a background check. Just recently I got a great paying job but they will do a background check. Please advise, thank you

will be attending the Police Acedemy in January 2009. I am putting myself through and I will be fully emersing myself in this program. This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time and now I have the opportunity. I am a little worried my employment background. Friend got a Minor in Possession (MIP) in Idaho in 2007, now lives in Oregon – an employment background search by an employer turned up the MIP – told him they need information on the event, or he’s fired.

I just got hired today to work at Target and im 17 years old. The only thing left before my orientation is a background check. I always thought of it as just a check on your criminal record, which I am not concerned with because I dont have one. However I read the info paper they sent me home with and it says its going to check criminal, consumer report, info. on my character, general reputation, personal characteristics, mode of living and credit standing. also public and educational records. verification of prior employment, reference check etc. The sheet says it may contain this stuff. being a 17 year old kid and going for an entry level position how much of this are they going to look into? The only part im worried about is i didnt exactly have perfect attendence in school and didnt exactly have 0 detentions either. Im also worried because I was hired at a pizza place but before my training was complete they let me go and I didnt put that on my app cuz I dont count that as a previous employer. I just came back from an interview at Weis Markets to work as a Pharmacy Tech – the pharmacist who interveiwed me really liked me (said so), and said that she was very intersted in hiring me pending my background check.
I don’t have any criminal records or driving records, and didn’t list any false infomation on my application…but, I’ve heard that employers sometimes do credit reports.
I had to be taken to the Emergency Room a few months ago, and the total bill was close to 900 dollars (I don’t have insurance, nor do I currently have a job, and the hospital wasn’t willing to work out a payment plan – they immediately sent it to the credit agency after 60 days). It has yet to be paid because I don’t have the money, but I have recieved letters saying that my debt to the hospital could effect my credit score.
Do you think that I might not get this job because of this? It’s not as though it’s thousands of dollars.

I was offered a job and as long as I pass the background check I am hired. The job is an entry level industrial labor position. The concern I have is back in March I was arrested. My wife and I had a shoving match and I got Domestic Violence and also was tagged with a Protection Order violation making a phone call to her the day I was served papers. I know, I know I was in the wrong and I admitted it and paid for it. They were both misdemeanors. So will those keep me for passing the background check?

I just applied for a position. The people called me back about my resume stating they were very interested in me for potential employment.

However, I noticed a mistake on my resume. For my current employment, I started in July of 2004 and I must not have been thinking correctly or made a typo or something because on my resume it states 2003. I didn’t deliberately lie about it, but I was too afraid to correct the woman when she said "Wow! So you’ve been there since 2003!" I didn’t want them to think I made frequent mistakes on my typing or anything.

Hello my boyfriend had to go for a Customs check at Logan airport….. He was hired for a job at the airport…. He passed his background check with his employer, but at Customs they will not except his Birth Certificate because he was born on an air force base not in the US….. What can he do?? I was arrested a few years ago when I was a minor. The crime I was charged with was a felony, but I was never convicted. It was instead reduced to a misdomeanor disorderly conduct. A few months after that, the entire record was expunged. The crime happened in 2001 and my attorney asked for it to reduced to a Misdeamenor since it was my First Offense. I didn’t realize it was on my Report until three months ago after moving to a new city to find employment.

I have 4 driving tickets on my record, one for not stopping completely before turning on a red light, one for merging out of a right-turn-only lane, one for driving HOV, and one for running a red light.

I also fudged alittle on my resume, for a position I put "Intern" instead of "Summer Associate."

I applied for a job with a warehouse company, everything seemed like it was going very well in the interview process. They always say they will ask for W2 to verify but they haven’t yet. I know there is a way fake W2s but is there any way an employment background check and verifythose documents.

I assume they can verify your salary but overall compensation year after year????? How far can background checks dig into your income?

I have been working at a car dealership for nearly two years, and they said that they were now required to run background checks on everyone. I filled out the form and they sent it in. I ask them how far it went back. They told me it was only to check over the last year. It picked up a shoplifting citation I plead guilty to 4 1/2 years ago. If I had known this was going back that far or that they hadn’t run one back that far, I would have explained what had happened before allowing them to send it.

I am very open about what I did and have never done anything like this before. I was in a terrible divorce when I committed this and plead guilty to a summary offense. The public defender told me this was no more than a citation and that it wouldn’t affect in the future as far as employment was concerned.

I have a cousin who worked with a fake social security using his real name…now he has his own real social security number and will go under a background check including employment history for a job…Now that he has his own will any of the jobs he used to work for with the fake social would come up in the new social security number when he goes through the background check?
Would the invetigator doing the background check would find out if he list all his previous employments? What if he doesn’t list his previous jobs would the investagator find out anyways?

My wife and I are staying at her parents until our apartment is ready. The apartment where her parents live want us to fill out an application with rental history, employment etc…. they also said they are going to do credit and background checks for the both of us. Also they want $ 40 for each. We are just staying for a month or so. Then we are leaving. Can they really do this. Her parents say we have to. They are afraid they will get thrown out.

This company that offered me a job is currently doing a background check on me….I can’t start until it clears. Well, I lied about the length of employment on one of my past jobs, and it seems they are having trouble verifying this job….it was an insurance sales job I got after college; I worked there for about a month till I realized I wasn’t cut out for it….but I stated I was there for a year. My would-be manager called me the other day and asked if I had that insurance company’s address because they are having trouble verifying that I worked there.

So they say that it pays to be honest. Should I call her back and explain to her that the reason they are having trouble verifying that I worked there is because I lied about how long I worked there? And then explain the reason I lied was because I didn’t want there to be a huge gap in my employment history. Do you think they would forgive me and still give me the job for coming out and being honest with them?

I need a trusted international private investigator or background check company to look into a potential business partner who has had employment and businesses in about 10 countries during the past 15 years (Asia, Europe and South America). want to check on the past record of someone i met – (aliases, address, marriage, divorce, asset, education, employment and criminal background. I think he might be hiding something

An arrest was reported on my background check for employment. It is true that I was arrested nearly two and a half years ago for a dui, which is what the report shows. However, it is inaccurate that the status of the case is waived, which is what the report shows. This gives the false impression that I am in the process of being sentenced.

In fact, the status of the case that they used for their information is from the preliminary hearing at the magisterial level, shortly after my arrest in 2007. The online document clearly shows the case disposition (dated 1/2008) as waived, and the status of the case as adjudicated, or closed, because it was waived at that time to the court of common pleas. In case anybody hasn’t noticed, this is 2010. Does it take two years to go to court for a dui? In any state?

At the courthouse level there is no record of my case. It was expunged after successful completion of ARD. For some reason, there is a glitch in the system, which I am currently in the process of trying to get corrected, so that this information is no longer available for public consumption and misinformation.

The second error is a "possible match". It’s someone who shares my first name only, shares my birth date, and lives in a state I have not visited since I was an infant. I hardly think I could have been capable of doing anything criminal when I was 11 months old.

I am 99% positive that this purveyor of misinformation (aka, the credit reporting agency — now there’s a possible match!) did not use the social security number that I provided to fact check my criminal history before releasing said misinformation to my possibly soon to be ex-potential employer.

How do I dispute these? I’m not sure that I want to forward a copy of my court order for release, dismissal and expungement (for privacy reasons) to a company that is so careless about the information they distribute, all the while including a disclaimer about it’s reliability and accuracy, and at the same time denying any responsibility for said unreliable and inaccurate information. If I performed that poorly at my job, I would have been fired a long time ago!

Is it up to me to prove that the information on my background check is inaccurate and incomplete, or is it up to the credit reporting agency?

If so, how do how "prove" that I am not the complete stranger that they are suggesting that I am?

I am currently trying to get Hired by Kaufman Tire, and I know that they drug screen, but as I spoke with the General Manager of the store today he said he was going to send my information in for a background check.

Okayyy so this is a first job kind of thing for me and im only 16. I applied for a job as a recreational aid at a senior citizen home and on my application they asked " In the past seven year have you ever been convicted of a felony." I checked no. I do have a Misdamenor for possesion under 20 grams and my desposition was community service. I have always been told if your honest on application your past will not be used against you. ( ANd I was ) But they did not ask me if I had any misdamenors, so I when my background check comes back I am sure they will see it b/c it is in public records, but they can’t hold it against be for not saying anything when technically they did not ask right ?

Previously I posted information on all these companies now that want to check your credit, and do background checks before they hire you. The question is this:

Aren’t you contributing to lawlessness by doing this? Suppose there is someone out there that has some unfavorable information on their record because LIFE HAPPENS TO US ALL, and you decide to not hire them because say they had a criminal record. Aren’t you adding to the criminal activity by not giving them jobs when they need jobs to rehabilitate themselves?

People are going to do what they have to do to survive. How are people supposed to rehabilitate their lives if no one will give them a chance? Also, for the Human Resources Supervisors, most of them don’t know how to make a decision, much less make a determination on whether or not someone is bad or good based on say a credit report or an arrest record. They just look at it and go oh this person filed bankruptcy, or this person has an arrest record, so they can’t have a job.

I think you are over looking some good hard workers that may want to reform their lives by making these kind of STUPID DECISIONS. Also, and I have seen this one, sometimes you hire people that have no blemishes on their records and they come into your companies and steal, miss time from work that costs the company money, lie and all sorts of other ails.

I went back to my three previously ranked jobs which have been the past 15years. In between that time from 1996 I was employed by a company for 3 months but didn’t mention them on the application. Im trying to get an apartment with my boyfriend. We will have the apartment as soon as they do a background check and employment verification. What can be found out about you through a background check? Like employment history..? Will they know if you have gotten fired before..?

I am working w/ a person who would like to learn the trade of Locksmith, however this person has conveyed to me that he has prior felony convictions. Based on this circumstance would this disqualify him for employment or apprenticeship training w/ a Locksmith.

I doesn’t really make sense to me that a company does creidit checks for employment. I completely understand about a background check, but what could there be on credit check that is not on a background check?

I filled out an application for a job today and had an interview. I signed a release to do a background/credit check. They asked for my date of birth on that release form. I left it blank. I havent been offered the job, I was only there for my first interview. I know that a backround/credit check can be done without a birthdate, and dont they wait until thett are least seriously considering hiring you, or have actally offered the position before a background check is done? Is asking for the birthdate on the other form just a sneaky way of finding out how old you are prior to offering you a job???

Ok, last thursday I got job offer with walmat as a cahier. I also let them know that I have a mesdimeanor that I commited in 2009. the manager said a background check has to be done. He said it could take up to 2 to 3 weeks. I thought they take only couple of days. I work for a well known financial advising firm, they want to offer me a full time position and hire me on the team. I have to fill out all this information on my background/education/employment and several financial questions. I’m licensed in insurance, have my series 7 and 63 so I’m not worried about any of the financial or criminal background checks. However I had a couple of jobs that I just walked out on, and pretty muched burned my bridges. Just to make it clear I was not fired, but I know they contact all my employers to verify, pay, duration of employment, and rehire status. Should I leave those 2 jobs out, and will they know? From my understanding they are only going to look at what I put down, and for the gap in employment I would just put stay at home dad, since I do have a child. I really hate to lie, but putting that info will most likely cost me a job offer….It would be about a 6 month gap.

I recently have been technically hired on at a call center. I’ve filled the documents out and have gone through the drug screening. Only thing left to "pass" is the background check. I have nothing illegal in my background or anything like that, it’s just for previous employment I put down a job I had during college at a kiosk in the mall. It was during a couple holiday months and the owner was desperate for a worker so he hired me right away and paid in cash, just a little less than minimum wage. So I never had any W-2s or pay stubs. I never knew I was supposed to claim that as self-employment on tax returns, but that’s what the internet is telling me.

I applied to the Houston Police Dept. in Houston, Texas and I was told by a friend who is a police lieutenant of the dept and he said that a friend of his came across my facebook page where it has an edited picture of me looking like a police officer. He said that could taken as impersonating a cop and also the background investigation might consist of looking at my facebook, twitter, myspace etc..God knows what. Do you think the police dept background investigation might check your facebook? or cell phone text messages? If that so, why doesn’t it say so? Needing some help please. I recently received a job offer for a Practice Management position after 3 months, 6 interviews and 5 references were provided. I was scheduled to sign contracts this week to begin working next Monday. However, the employer in a last minute turn of events, asked the recruiter to run an employment background check and credit check on me. The recruitment agency contacted me via phone and left a voice message asking for my consent to run these reports. I responded through email saying to go ahead but that I had a prior bankruptcy that occurred in 2005 that I felt sure would be an issue for the employer. The recruitment agency then called me to ask me if I was interested in divulging any details about this as they also felt sure she would "freak out" and have questions. I explained in brief that it was due to medical bills and opted to say no more.
I then spoke to my HR guru friend who told me that the law states any credit check has to be requested via a signed consent form. I quickly called the recruiter back to halt the process as I was also advised to not do it as these things are often very sketchy and not relevant. By the time I called to stop the process and state this was highly suspect, it was too late. The reports were run and the results related to the employer via a phone call. They assured me in a written letterhead document that no hard copy was sent to the employer nor had they kept the documents on file as they were not obtained legally and correctly.
As expected, the employer now is very upset by the bankruptcy. She feels she cannot trust her 2.5 million dollar practice to person with such a questionable history. That would be me. Yes, I’m furious and very very hurt. My background check is perfect..not so much as a speeding ticket. I’ve never been arrested, have felony convictions, etc. Nothing. Further, as previously stated, I have endured a marathon of 6 interviews and provided 5, yes 5 references..all stellar. She now wants to hold off on any decisions of employment pending some questions she now wants to ask me regarding the bankruptcy.
I am angry and feel discriminated against. First off, I understand that the collection of this data was not legally obtained. Further, I also know that asking me personal questions of this magnitude is also walking a thin line of legal correctness. If you can’t ask a potential employer if they are married or have kids, then how can you pry into their personal financial history and make that person justify themselves?
My question is obvious I guess: Do I have a legal case? And should the employer opt to forgo employment with me even though an offer was presented to and accepted by me, is this more of a case for discrimination?

@ WRG: Actually, no. It is not legal to attach credit check forms to applications for employment. This is a separate document that must be separately signed and a copy given to the applicant as well as kept on file in the employment office.
Further, I do not have bad credit, I have a bankruptcy 6 years ago. Nothing else is in question.
Finally, a verbal authorization does not preclude taking legal measures to ensure I am protected and the employer is protected. It’s a 3 part process: first is the signed form stating you understand a credit check might be performed. Then if the employer decides to pull the credit check, they must have an employee sign another statement giving consent, then if employment is denied based upon that credit check a copy of the credit report and a document stating the reasons why employment was denied must be given to the applicant. Verbal or not, it’s not legal.

I was arrested for a minor DUI/MIP a couple months ago but I still haven’t gone through the courts and officially convicted for it. Also, my license was suspended. Would all this show up on a background check? I heard that most employers don’t even do the check they just want to see if you’d agree to it.

Just went on an interview for a secretarial position at a local hospital. They will be running a criminal background check. Fifteen years ago I was arrested for shoplifting, assault (as when the secret shopper grabbed my arm I tried to peel her hand off of me, and was charged with assault), possession of marijuana… very little amount. I turned my life around around after these arrests, went on to have three children, and I am a respectful citizen.

I really want this job!!! I am very nervous that this will show up and prohibit an offer of employment.

Yes, they are convictions.. they are misdemeanors. About nine years ago I applied for a job at a nursing home in Pennsylvania and this showed up. The person who interviewed me called me and wanted to meet with me to discuss this. I had already accepted another job and did not meet with her. I am not sure if she was going to offer me the job, even with seeing these convictions or not. At that point in time, it was only 6 years after the convictions. At the present time, these convictions are from 15 years ago, so I am hoping that they will not show up. All I can do at this point is hope I guess!

The background check has been completed for over a week. I called and was told they had to verify some additional employment dates that were not completed initially.

I went in for an interview as a RCA. I have given consent for my background check. I waited about a week and now they have scheduled my drug test. Even after all this good news, I am nervous about my driving record having so many points.

My question: Is all of this information taken and then considered at once? Or do they look at my driving record and if it checks out, proceed with the background check and if it checks out, then they schedule a drug test. I am so anxious to find out and I’d rather no longer have to worry.

I have 2 bench warrants on my driving record, I know I need to appear in court and pay my fines to have them cleared and as soon as i can save enough money to do so I will. I have submitted several employment applications at various locations and I’m not hearing back from anyone. My question is, are my warrants preventing me from acquiring employment? I was arrested 5 years ago with an aggravated assault charge. I pled not guilty ( I was really NOT guilty) and the judge gave me a letter of release from the charges and I was not convicted, and the case was closed. I just had a pre-employment background check done from a college I want to work at, and everything is ok except this arrest record is showing up. They have given my info to corporate to investigate further. First I want to know why it is on my record when I was not convicted and released from the charges?? The second question–is it possible to still get the job with this? I asked the Admissions Director and he said it was out of his hands, and doesn’t look good because it is in Corporate’s hands now. I brought this to my employer-to-be’s attn, and she seemed fine with it. By the way, I have the job pending this background check. Does IBM do pre employment drug test and background checks

I have recently gone through an interview process and been offered a new job. My only concern is around the background check. I have no criminal record or history, but I did leave a previous job for undisclosed reasons, and have signed an NDA as a part of that severance. All I can say on that matter is that there was no malfeasance on my part, but I am still worried about what might come up when the background check is done.

I even have my direct manager from that job listed as a reference. I was a very good employee there, and she will say excellent things about me. But if they contact the HR department, I do not know what will be communicated. Can anyone offer expert insight as to how that all works? Thanks!
I worked for this previous employer for 6 years. That job was a significant part of my professional experience and qualification. So it is on my resume, and prospective employers will know that I worked there. So, knowing that, my question is about what the HR department legally can and likely will tell them about my dismissal, and not about whether they’ll find out that I worked there at all.

My daughter recently saw her employee record and pre-employment background check. It listed her as HIGH RISK. She has a perfect credit history, college degree, excellent employment record and no criminal history. She phoned the background checking agency and asked why. They responded that she is HIGH RISK because she is my daughter and when I went through a life challenging health challenge and became disabled, I had to file for bankruptcy. Because my daughter was living at home at the time of my illness / bankruptcy, they say that makes her HIGH RISK. My health crises and bankruptcy should have NOTHING to do with my daughter’s life. Is this legal? If not, how do we fix this? Who knows how many jobs she has been denied because of the false HIGH RISK status!
She does not live with me. She has had two homes since this happened and nothing has changed this negative report. It simply cannot be legal for an agency to assign blame to one person for another person’s actions. If I committed murder, you wouldn’t also go to jail just because we lived together. If my current landlord files for bankruptcy, it has NOTHING to do with me. A child cannot be responsible in any way for their parents financial collapse due to a near death health challenge.

My brother recently applied to the Miami PD. He passed the original test, passed the physical agility, passed the polygraph, had an oral interview and his psychological evaluation. The next step is the background check. He does have a disorderly conduct (which was sealed in NY) and he DID put that on all his paperwork – so there shouldn’t be any surprises.

I recently got hired at a job on Wednesday of Last week(2-9-11) Im just waiting for my pre-employment background check before I can start. Here is the issue. I received a Letter today from the Courthouse saying I have a Warrant For My Arrest and the warrant was issued on 2-11-11. I immediately went down to the courthouse to figure out why, cause I havent done anything wrong. I talked to the lady and The warrant was issued because I havent finish paying my DUI class. She immediately Recalled the warrant and NO more warrant, issue solved. Now I am stressed out. I want this job so bad! Would it show up on my background check? and Should I call the employer tomorrow and tell her the situation? (The lady told me the warrant would be immediately off my background check)

i asked this question last night but didnt get the answer i wanted so here goes again. I have two driving charges vc.23103 and vc.23140 one being a infraction and one a misdemeanor. i recently had these charges expunged but according to the clerk at the court these charges still remain on the record but will say "dismissed". now what i’d like to know is am i suppose to mention this to employers or just answer "no" when it asks if i’ve ever been convicted of a crime.

I am looking into joining the military as an intelligence officer. This position requires a TS clearance. Looking at the form, it asks if any US government agency has conducted a background investigation on me. Is a local police agency considered a US government agency? I had applied with some local police agencies a few years ago and they conducted background investigations on me for employment. The TS form has an option for "other" under investigating agencies. Would local police be considered "Other?" or should my response state "No", I have never been investigated by the US government?

A friend of mine (whom i was planning on living with) recently got a job and an apartment. The real estate lady called the two of us telling us that there’s a problem with my potential roommate’s criminal record – but she couldn’t elaborate any further until he spoke with my roommate directly

He got in trouble for stealing goods from a department store and trying to enter a nightclub with a fake ID. Both were misdemeanors, although I don’t know which class/level in PA.

What’s the likelihood of him getting kicked out of the apartment, and him failing the background check by a large, multinational company (He’d be a sales guy) – thus losing employment?

Here’s the situation: I recently started working as a caretaker at a home for people with developmental/physical disabilities. A year ago, I was committed to a mental institution for a week because a psychiatrist mistook my self-injury for suicidal tendencies. I have scars all over my arms from the intense depression and anxiety I went through, and am going through (to a lesser degree) now.

My question is: Could this affect my job? They will run a background check, and I know the stay at the institution will show up. My employer may or may not ask me about it. I really don’t know anything about how businesses handle these things. And, because I spend a lot of my time bathing/changing the clients at this home, I have to roll up my sleeves at some point; and one of my coworkers is bound to see it eventually.

I’d just like to know what the business could/couldn’t do about this, and how much privacy I have. Is it a problem if it doesn’t affect my job performance?

I took a temporary job for a couple of days and had to undergo a drug and background check. That was two months ago. About five weeks later, the company wanted me back again for a couple of days. They will be using USIS to get background information…will my previous failed pre-employment drug test show up? I just got hired at a large bank, and they conduct pre-employment background checks. No, I’m not a criminal. But, it looks like they verify dates of past employment with other companies. Problem being, I might have been off by a month or so with the time-frames for working at these past employers. Am I going to be out of luck and without a job because The times are off by like a month (Literally its like no more than a 1 month difference)? Or do you think they consider that you might have the dates wrong? I sure hope I can still get this job!

My husband is applying for a job at a bank and in the application it says that they perform a background check through the FBI. When he was younger (16), he got in trouble in a different state and got a misdemeanor on his juvenile record, which is now presumably sealed. Is this going to show up on this background check? He has never had an issue with it before when applying for other jobs, but we figured the bank would do a more thorough check.

I reside in Florida. I was cited with an Ordinance Violation 10 years ago (I was 17, which is an adult in the state of WI) in the state of Wisconsin. I paid a fine and never went to court or had any other repercussions. I was offered a job and they required me to submit to a finger-print background check. On the Background Check Auth and Release, it said ‘have you ever been or are you currently being tried for/charged with a misdemeanor or felony?’ so I answered ‘NO’ which is the truth either way since it isn’t even a misdemeanor on my background. I asked the clerk at the Municipal court and she said it is possible for it to show on a deep Background check BUT it would show as a citation, not a misdemeanor. I interviewed two weeks ago,. I felt like the interview went well. There were two positions were being offered. I was told by the interviewer, that I was more qualified for the xxx position rather than the entry-level position, which is a good sign, based upon background and experience. I am applying for a government job and they are running a background check on me. i have 4 jobs listed on my resume but they are from 6 and 7 years ago so im not sure these people will even remember me working there because i didnt stay there long. and i wasnt even sure i put the correct contact info on there. will they check those jobs or just the jobs that were recent or that i was working with for more than a year?

Today i was told by an hr person that they were going to do a background check on me. From what it seems in MA an employment background check seems to be different than an employer checking your CORI. it seems like most places that look up your CORI are places that work with kids, patients, elderly and there are specific consent forms requesting your signature of approval to look this up along with getting your social security #, etc. I was asked for none of this. What exactly comes up in an employment background check? I was arrested last spring for possible dui and i’m currently fighting it with a lawyer. Even my lawyer told me it’s usually just housing type places, gov agencies and places that work with kids that check a CORI. In my experience, employers typically do background verification and check references prior to confirming the offer. But the recent offer states that they will do a criminal background check and verify references after I start employment and that the employment could be terminated if the checks are not satisfactory. The offer is from a financial company and this would be my first job in financial sector. Is this a standard practice? What do you think?

I am in the final stages of my pre-employment BG check. This company took my fingerprints to run an ‘FBI background check’. They, of course, didn’t say exactly what that means which, according to the FBI, is that they run the simply run the fingerprints to make sure they don’t pop up in that federal database. I reside in a Southern state but I was cited with an Ordinance Violation 10 years ago in another state. I was 17, which is an adult in the state of Wisconsin, where this occurred. I paid a fine and never went to court or had any other repercussions. I was offered a job and they required me to submit to a finger-print background check. On the Background Check Auth and Release, it said ‘have you ever been or are you currently being tried for/charged with a misdemeanor or felony?’ so I answered ‘NO’ which is the truth either way since it isn’t even a misdemeanor on my background. I asked the clerk at the Municipal court and she said it is possible for it to show on a deep Background check BUT it would show as a citation, not a misdemeanor. At this point, what’s done is done and I am just curious of what others think. I have gotten a lot of great answers already but like to get a lot of input. When I was 17 (I am 18 now), I got a "minor dui" and since my bac was so low, it was ticketed as "driving while impaired to the slightest degree" which sounds better than a dui. According to my parents, the court said it would be earased off my criminal record when I turn 18. But I don’t know for sure. I didn’t put it on my application, because my parents and other people told me not to because it was a juveinille offense. I already had the interview/passed the drug test, and I am scheduled for training next week, so I can’t go back and explain my case…

Since it was a juveinelle offense, and I already did my stuff for it (besides the 2 year license suspension), is it still going to show up on my CRIMINAL (not driving) record?

A company has already completed a reference check on me. Now they are doing a background check. I thought the reference check was the background check. Does the background include past employment? Or was that part of the reference check? I am so confused.
I guess another question would be is a reference check the same as employment verification? What exactly is employment verification?

My credit has already been given the okay and I’ve never had any incidents with the law so I’m clear on criminal. But I have smoked weed with in the last 7 years and the last time I did was about a year and a half ago. They asked on the application how many times and I put under 30. (hell I’m 26 years old… beside the older I got the less the it happened and now I don’t even do it… Clinton did it!!!) anyway…

So while I’m waiting I’m going crazy hoping that my application isn’t rejected because of this. I didn’t want to lie about it on the application since I may have to go through this process again and for a more extensive type of clearance.

Does anyone know if there is some sort of guideline followed when doing a background checks as extensive as this?

The company i applied for asked for misdemeanors or felonies in the past seven years, in the job application. They have told me the job is mine if I can clear the background check. I have an INFRACTION (much smaller than a misdemeaanor) of "theft of property" which is almost 7 1/2 years old. Would this still affect me? Ive lost opportunities in the past over this (but it was only 2-4 years old those times) do you think a jewelry store will hire me, given that its not a misdemeanor or felony and is past 7 years? I am a recent college graduate and just got offered an awesome job and was wondering if previous employment is included on background checks. I held SEVERAL summer jobs some which I actually forgot about. Well I filled out this form and sent it out then remembered some other places that I worked. I am unable to go back to correct this information and am simply wondering if past employment is included or do they simply check the references i provided on my resume.
I am simply curious. I have worked many jobs in the past that did background checks but didn’t seem to acknowledge that I left out these summer jobs. I am just a little anxious considering I just landed my dream job and didn’t bother to mention my past summer employment.
FYI. I have seen similiar questions and they vary, covering two different extremes. Either it doesn’t matter what you put on an application as long as you worked there and it is relevant to the job for which you applied or not putting all work history will be looked upon as dishonesty.

How far in depth does a background check go into?? I mean, its not like i’m applying for the police department or something… Heres the thing, Exactly one year ago, I was DETAINED ONLY for misdemeanor vandalism. The person never pressed charges cuz it was my friend. We were drinking at the club, i was outside, waiting for everyone to come out, the police were pushing everyone aside to move along, i was leaning on my friends rearview mirror and it broke off. I then copped an attitude with the police officer, and he ended up hauling me off to the nut-house for the night. When i went to court for my scheduled appearance, the person told me that I didnt have to be there since charges werent pressed, however; if my friend wanted to, he had up to a year to take action. Nothing happened. Now i just applied at this place, all i’m waiting for is my background check. What are the chances that this little incident will show up???

I have always pass pre-employment background check. I never file for bankruptcy or been convicted of any crime. I search for my public records and it turns out clean. Even though my credit score is low risk but I do have payment issue in the past. Does late payments in the past affects the result of my background check?

I worked at a business for aproximately 2 months and left for various reasons. Do to the fact that I worked there for such a short time I have chosen not to list that particular job on my resume (which I know is fine to do) but to not list it on an application is omission. Even though that particular job is not listed doesn’t mean they can’t find out. My main two part question is can a future employer find out AND if so how? I have a question. I know if a person is convicted of a crime, that will show up on a record. My question is, if you are currently on probation for the convicted crime, will that show up on a background check as well? This is in re guards for employment background checks.

When I was 19 I through a party when my parents were out of town. Everything was going great. Then I hear this banging noise and a girl crying. I pleaded innocent, but my Attorney told me to plead down to a lesser charge of Summary harrassment. Initial charge was aggrevated assault. He said she could get on the stand and start crying and that could be bad for everyone. So the man who beat her got 90 days in jail and I pleaded guilty to Summary harrassment. Perhaps a firm that would be willing to hire me despite this issue – and I can and will substantiate my outstanding character, honesty, and integrity. Interested more on the side of any criminal background rather the emphasis on credit history. Hoping too, to find something cost effective. Does your company use such a program? Was it helpful?

About 10years ago I pleaded guilty on a misdeamor charge, I felt I had no other choice at the time, and the DA told me if I took the guilty plea that the charge could be expunged. Right around the time I landed my dream job in tv I had a cyst develop in my eardrum. It drestroyed all my hearing and I had to have major surgery last year. I ended up leaving the tv job because my ear did not heal as fast as it was supposed to and I couldn’t do my work on headset. I took two clerical jobs after that, but was fired from both of them within the first couple weeks because I wasn’t "learning fast enough."

I don’t put those two jobs down on resumes and applications, and have since regained all of my hearing, but can’t seem to get hired anywhere either.

i was told that non violent felonies don’t show up for employment background check (unless they "really" dig or your running for city office). which is why some applications ask "have you been convicted of a felony in the last "x" yrs? is this true? i was convicted of a felony when i was eighteen, (eleven yrs. ago). i’ve been self employed since then but would really like to be employed full time. due i still have to put that i have a felony on all my applications?

I havent heard anything back and i was supposed to hear back like 2 weeks ago. i figured there must be like an outstanding warrant for my arrest and freaked out. i called my local police department and they said they could check my records (contrary to belief i guess u can check over the phone, my police dept even has a warrant division) the nice woman checked several databases and said she couldnt see any warrant in or outside of the state of california. i told her there was a problem with my background check and she said she didnt know what it could be. could the check have seen more than the police could? like some secret warrant?

Here’s the thing: I just got hired at sears, and they are going to do a background check on me over the weekend. Long story short, I did not know that I even had a court date, let alone a warrant for failure to appear in court. The court date was for an unpaid ticket that I had about 4 years ago, and they suspended my licsence because I did not show up for court, but I did not know that they issued a warrant. I have moved multiple times within the last 4 years, which is why I was never made aware of the court date. Anyway, I did get arrested on the warrant about 2 weeks ago, I basically paid bail (which is going towards the fine that I owe) and have a court date set for next month, but my big question is, will it show up on a background check, and if it does do you think they will hold that against me because it was only for a traffic violation? I had a bounced check about a year ago and a speeding ticket on my record, that was it. Due to this the company called me the day before I was supposed to start and told me that I was no longer eligible for employment. I just don’t understand how pre-employment checks are even legal? Isn’t that personal information that is none of their business? I can understand having a felony or even a DUI but not a bounced check!!!

I am a student pursuing a degree in finance and am beginning to seek employment at a financial institution in order to gain experience in the field. However, I have been convicted of misdemeanor corruption of minors at the age of 18 during my senior year of hs. It has been four years since I committed this offense and I have taken some steps in the right direction. I have maintained a very high GPA and have been involved in various campus organizations at school. My ultimate goal is to seek a pardon several years down the road, assuming I have no future arrests, of course, but I do not know how much my criminal background will affect my current job prospects. I worked a few months when I was 19, then I moved in with my fiance, and was basically a "homemaker", as he did not want me to work. I just handle housekeeping, cooking, paying bills, running errands. This was 10 years ago, and in the past 10 years I have been a homemaker. The only job i’ve had is "self employment" (babysitting and cleaning houses). I did take a temp job for a couple months back in 2006. Other than that, and the job I hate in ’99, nothing worth putting on an application. (Had a couple convenience store jobs over the years, but not long lasting, due to only having one car and having conflict with HIS hours.)

We now have a second vehicle, and I am DESPERATE to get a job outside the home! LOL

At least one place I am applying with does at extensive background check, including employment history and credit check.

Can they verify the length of time you were employed with a company, and the EXACT dates? I called the restaurant I worked at back in ’99 to get the exact dates of hire and leaving, but they say they do not keep records past a few years. So, i’m not sure what the date were! Will the companies doing the background checks be able to find the info even so? If I just guess that the dates, will that look horrible?

Also, any advice as to how I should explain the huge employment gaps.

I applied for a job yesterday that required a background check. I was wondering if jobs I had before I turned 18 will come up? I don’t have anything to hide, but I didn’t list one of the jobs I had in high school because the experience I gained there didn’t pertain to the job I was applying for and there were only 4 spaces to list previous work experience so I chose to write down the places that were more like the job I was applying for. I just don’t want the potential new employer to think that I’m hiding something because I didn’t list it… if I had that job when I was 17 (started the job and quit the job when I was 17) will it come up on a background check? Background checks also show previous employment history. Depending on what type of background check is being conducted. I got the impression from the paperwork I filled out that it’d be check both criminal history and my employment history.

i had an interview with jcpenneys the lady told me i got the job but they need to wait on my background check it has been a week and i start tomorrow the lady from the actual place who did my background check called me 3 days ago and asked me what the charge was and i have a first offense dui she said thank u thats all we needed and jcpenneys still hasnt gotten it and i gotta call them tomorrow before i go in to see if i passed the background so will my dui hinder me on getting the job as a salesman mens department?

I was wondering two things. First, what is the purpose of a credit check for employment at places like WalMart? I understand background checks, but a credit check? Also, if I do not have good credit, does that mean I cannot be hired for places like this? I just really don’t get the point of it if everything else is fine why a credit check matters. Please explain.

I was just hired for a new job at Noodles and Company and just submitted to a background check. I’ve only had one previous job, and was fired from it. When I was asked about previous employment at the interview, I said I had never had a job. Will the background check show that I was lying?

I am wanting to do a background check on myself from an employer’s point of view. I know there are many sites that do this, however all of them have complaints that the information is incomplete or that the cost for the check does not cover the information requested. What site should I use?

I want as much information on "myself" as possible.
THE REASON WHY?
My identity was stolen years ago and I just found out.
I have been applying for jobs like crazy for months (hundreds at this point) with postive interviews and feedback but they just won’t hire me.
I have an excellent work history, excellent professional refrences, College educated(3.96GPA) never been fired from a job, an as far as I know I have no criminal record, clean driving record (never had a ticket or accident) and never have I ever been to court.

I wonder if at this point if someone has used my identity and there will be somthing found in my background check to reveal why employers refuse to hire me.
I would like to add,
I am not limiting myself to the type of jobs for which I am applying. I’ve applied for everything from sales, customerservice, data entry, office assistant type jobs, art postions, jobs in fast food, retail, warehouses, airlines, telemarketing, television/media/news, goverment /federal jobs.
I apply for any job that fits my skills and now I am at the point of applying for anthing that I know I am capable of doing or fits my qualifications.

Day labor won’t send me out because they "don’t send out many women" and I end of waiting until they say "no more jobs"

I am 24, ready and able to work. It is just baffling.
No tattoos anywhere, I have just my ears pierced once.

Annual credit report showed just the address of someone who did steal my social security card and used it, but I did the police report for that.

But what I wonder is what site has a background check, or what "thing" would employers look for then turn someone down because of that "thing" that they found.

I’m wondering if they ask what you make and if they report that to the new company.

what is considered bad, criminal misdeamers or bad credit?

I applied for a position in the billing dept. of a city hospital. I interviewed once with 5 board members and the interview seemed to go well. I was given a consent form to fill out for a background check.
I would like to know if anyone has had to wait for a background check for employment at a hospital and if so how long does it take?

If I got put on academic probation at my university, would that show up on my background check for employment?

they said that they will call me as soon as they do a background check / drug test.
Did the drug test already, but that’s not important.
What exactly does a Background Check consist of?

More specifically, would/will they check my previous employment?
Are they able to? (Long story, got fired from somewhere a long while ago, but I don’t list them as a reference.)
Or is it only a legal/criminal records kind of thing?

I contracted for a modeling agency for two years and filed 1099 tax forms for this contracted employment. I would prefer to not list this employment on my resume because it does 80% of its business as legit modeling work and 20% adult modeling work. Can background checks find out who you were employed by if you don’t list the previous employers on your resume. For instance, could the background check make the link between filing the 1099 forms and the employment with the modeling agency?

i was arrest for a felony but havent made a plea or been convicted of anything yet. will it still show up?

Furthermore, when applying to FINRA (formerly NASD) for registration as a Financial Consultant, one has to fill out a U4 and various other forms, do any of the forms ask about garnishments either directly or indirectly?

My son has been offered a retail job as an assistant manager. They are conducting a background check and we are wondering what types of things they are looking for. He has no criminal background, but did lose his driver’s license for speeding tickets It has since been restored.. He also has one collection account on his credit report. He has made arrangements for repayment, but will these things hurt his chances? His former employers would all give him good references.Thanks!

I was not arrested, or fingerprinted. They just gave me a ticket. This is in NYC, where it is a violation of an "Administrative Code 10-125 B, a violation not a crime as charged on this summons." The pink summons says to plead guilty and pay a dollar fine.

I have no previous arrests, summonses, or anything of the sort. Will this appear on background checks for employment? Will this be on my record? Thanks for your answers!

I want to have access to information that employers look at about me… Where is that available to look up?

I’m American while however my Australian wife who lives here in America with me only has a premanent residency and employment card. But being that she has no real true American forms of ID yet that link to the police department so I’m wondering if when she looks for a job would employeers have to be willing to do a special background check or would it be easy?

over 6 months ago I got a drunk in public and now the company who offered me employment is conducting a background check. The industry is property management, will they still hire me?

I did a stupid thing once, shoplifting. The police wasn’t involved and i paid the civil demand. I know some retailers still put the info in the privately shared database. So, I am wondering if banks check this as part of their pre-employment background check? Is this information even legal to use against a new hire since it is not a public record.

I have been selected to a job but now they are going to do a full background check.If I fail the employment history check due to lying about the places and time periods of my work experience what sort of actions will a company take for lying on the resume.I need answers from similar experiences.please!

I know that employers do Criminal background checks. But what other information to they look up. I know they are able to look up past employment history. Obviously I know who I have been employed with but is there a way to view this "report" to see what information is on it?

I’m really curious what is on my background chart and since every employer now runs a background check where can I run my own? I’d like to use the same company that most major employers use. I’ve googled free, lol yahoo just told me I misspelled googled, anyway I seached online for background checks and most are just straight up criminal checks. I’d like to have the criminal check but I want to look at the same thing my future employers will be looking at. Thanks in advance for any help.
