I just got hired for a new job in a health club. But they said they will do a background check. Will they be able to find out that I had a felony from another state?

I have been offered employment at what I consider my dream Job. This employer has the standard application, which asks a difficult question regarding background and misdemeanor and or felony possession. I have a misdemeanor of moral interpitude, which I am not proud of; never the less it is a blemish.

My dilemma is a catch 22 of sorts. If I disclose my background, I hurt my chances to further negotiations. If I choose not to disclose it is considered a lie and I can be let go if a background check comes back negative.

Here is the question, how can I best address this issue and keep my head up high??

I found a great job. Today was my first day as an intake coordinator/ administrative assistant for a local child advocacy center. I absolutely love this job. I want to someday become an advocate myself. Great pay, great hours, great people, location, etc. It is all around perfect for me. This is the first time that I feel like I am actually contributing. I also have a baby, whom I am trying to support. I feel a connection to this job, because I love children. Here’s the problem- I am an ex- drug offender. The crime is simple possession of a controlled substance. I have been in treatment for 2 years. It is 2 years in the past (I am 20 years old). Today when I was about to leave, my supervisor gave me some paperwork to take home. New employment papers, which included the submission for a background check. Do you think that the director will understand, that I will be able to keep this wonderful job? I have to keep this job, I could always find another, but I want this. Please help!!!!!

I applied to a police department and i am waiting for my background check to be complete. When i filled out the background, i forgot to include a job that I received and filled paper work for, but did not end up doing the job. Will this appear on my employment history as being "fired" even though i did not work a single hour and/or collect a single cent?

I was given a conditional offer for employment with AT&T today. The conditional offer will become permanent upon a favorable background check and drug test. They will verify employment and I am worried that they will find a few honest discrepencies with the dates of employment.

The case was dismissed and the terms of the probation were completed. I am now in the first year of the five year waiting period and am trying to get a job. On the employment application I was told that employers still look at the charge as a conviction. So would it be better to disclose it up front seeing as they will do a background check and and see the charge although it did not result in a conviction and the case was discharged or dismissed?

I understand that there is not specific legal statute against an employer who refuses to verify your employment, but if you were offered a job (orally), your background check came back clean and the only thing pending is for your former employer to response and verify employment, but they refuse to (boss won’t even return your emails/calls) mainly becuase you decided to leave his company and pursue a more satisfying career; can you legally sue your boss if your prospective employer takes back your oral job offer?

I had a group interview yesterday for an entry-level job (there were 6 others besides me). The interviewers liked a couple of my answers & i got a favorable impression from them. They emailed me the same day asking me to move through the application process & fill out background check and pre-employment forms. They didn’t say I got it for sure, but does it sound like it??

employment eligibility as in SS number or passport. I ran a background check on an employee and saw their ss number showed as 3 people. When pressed for a copy of SS card or passport, they resigned. Can I withhold the pay until they prove it?

I was let go from my company in april and my company will be closing its doors this Sept. I started collecting unemployment checks. My old boss (who is the president and the owner) said I can still say that I’m currently working there and he would vouch for me. but when a company does a background check, will they find out I’m collecting unemployment? If you fail a pre-employment drug test does it go on your background check where other employers see where you failed a pre-employment drug test?

I applied to Finishline and I already had an interview and I’m taking a drug test tomorrow. I really dont have any "real" work experience, but I did work at Wal-Mart as a cart pusher last summer for a week and a half and quit because I didn’t like the work conditions and management. Would this show up on my background check for a new job? The company has bin long closed cause another company bought it in 2008. Will any info of this company be available to prove my employment, n held position there? Should I even leave this on my resume?

I received a great job offer from a couple that performed a post-offer background check. I was a victim of identity theft that resulted in criminal charges against my name. This happened nearly 10 years ago and I was never convicted of the crime and I was granted an expungement. The charges appeared in a background check that the third party company provided to the prospective employer. I provided them with a criminal record check from the Pennsylvania State Police stating that I have no criminal record but was told by the company they need to do additional investigation. They really want to offer me the job but corporate security hasn’t given the clearance as of yet. Can they rescind the offer if the corporate security tell them what I provided is not enough? It clearly states I do not have a criminal record so how can they hold what they found against me? I really want this job. Any serious advice is appreciated. Thank you

I have gotten a yes for employment and did a drug, license, and background check all on the same day. I have moved from another state 1/2 yr ago, so i guess the company will check on that too.

the thing is, its been 2.5 weeks already, and i didnt get a call from them. i know i got nothing to hide, i wont waste their time or my time. how long does situations like mines take? where they have to check records of 2 states for background and license, since i had a license in the other state. its for a shuttle bus driving company

i dont want to call them just yet, since i dont want to bother them. maybe i will call on the 4th week when it doesnt come back

But to be honest, I was tired of being frowned upon for having some short-term jobs. Employers were questioning me about not staying long enough at some jobs, I was never fired and had valid family issues for why I didn’t stay at some jobs for as long as I would have liked.

Every job I have ever had in my adult life has required an initial drug test, and random drug tests after that and a background check as well as a credit check. All decent companies as well as the states and federal governments require these for employment. Why do so many people complain about this part of the application process?

What are the tests the employer will perform during the background check? Ex; Criminal record/ credit checks/ drug policy/. I was terminated from employment (for not reaching the targets of the employer. Will they inform to the new employer?

I was already offered the job at Fremont Bank, submitted to a drug test and everything. In my application I lied about a past job, or rather claimed that my reason for leaving was that I "sought career growth". I was informed that they will conduct a consumer report through Employee Relations, Inc. My orientation day is tomorrow, and I was offered the job 3 days ago. Would they have conducted a background check (employment verification) by now or should I still be worried? I’m scared they’ll call that past employer and find out that I was actually fired rather than voluntarily quit.

I’m in the process of enlisting in the National Guard and got curious about what shows up on the background check that is conducted before you swear in at MEPS.
What I have learned so far is that the background check they do looks at education and employment verification and criminal offenses and such. What I’m curious about is if you were fired from your job for something other than a criminal offense (like forgetting to mop the floor or something), will is show up on a background check? And is the background check conducted before the contract is handed to you to sign?

I just started a commission only job in California selling door to door telecommunication packages It’s strange that I previously worked at a national retail chain before which I had a drug test – paid by the employer But these people now want to charge the employee – for a background check – which I seriously doubt that they really did, and for the drug test These are some big bucks for someone having to do this kind of job

Many employment applications will state upfront and in unambiguous terms that there will be a drug test and background check required for employment at the firm and requests agreement to this. This one did not. In fact there was no formal application at all. Thus, how could drug testing be illegal in California. I see references to one or both of these checks indeed being illegal in some states, but I can’t spend the time to sort through every state, etc.
Where could I find information about "California law prohibits an employer from charging an employee for a background check" – references to specific official statutes, codes, etc?

My fiance is applying for a job, is a company that works with disabled children and requires for the employees to transport the children. So when they do a background check they said it includes traffic violations. My fiance got a speeding ticket at the beginning of this month and his court date is not until next month. His dad is a captain at the highway patrol in the county where we live so he said he would try and see if he could help get it reduced, but we were in another county when he got the ticket. His dad said we had to wait until the court date though. My question is, if he applies now will they see the speeding ticket on his background check since it hasn’t gone to court yet and is not on his insurance? Also, this was his first ticket, and his first time even being pulled over could someone honestly not hire someone because of a speeding ticket??

Ok i was watching this show on TV about a minor theft: Just wondering if a minor (lets say 16 years of age) was caught under the act of stealing worth of merchandised in an outlet store, if release under his/her parent’s signature with no charges or penalties because it was his/her first time but was charged a fee. If he/she was to go through an employer background check would that show up?

I was a young single mother who got way in over my head with credit. In a time frame of 2001-2003, I was extremely negligent. I am much more responsible with myself now. Unfortunately, bad credit does not come off over night. I am even putting myself into a financial slump by paying off all my bad debt. To me it is worth it though! OK so Once again i was charged with possession of marijuana in 2003, i plead guilty to it and was put on felony probation for 5 years. I completed my probation in January 2009. My question is do employers who check your background look at the 2003 date (the date i was convicted) or The date i completed the probation period? This is important because if they look at 2003 it would be almost 8 years ago that i was convicted of the felony. But if they look at the 2009 date it would only be only 2 years, please let me know what u think employers look at when they look at your background check. Thanks in advance.

After some gruesome interviews and real hard work, I ended up getting an offer from a big company which outsources their background checks to a third party vendor. However, there are two minor discrepancies in the dates that I gave for my background check verification. Both are off by a month. My graduation month I specified as May instead of April since my exams wound up in May but my graduation certificate shows April. Also, I was continuously employed for the last 5 years. So my first job wound up in the end of Oct and the second one started in Nov. But I accidentally specified that my first one ended in Nov and the second one started in Dec. I guess, my second employer during the background check confirmation, mentioned the correct date (Nov) as my joining date.

Do these discrepancies qualify as ‘lies’ and does that mean I would not end up working at the big company. Or are these treated as small issues and could be corrected by the company later?

I am interviewing with a Fortune 500 company. I did pizza delivery for about a month back in May and I was terminated due to an altercation with a co-worker.

If they run a background check will that show up? Now I know they give you a form to list your previous employment, would it show up on there? Could I just leave the job off the form?

1) How precise are companies when it comes to background checks? For example, if I was off a month when I did my employment dates for a certain position, would this be considered a ‘red flag’ to denial? (I simply ask because I am not 100% certain on the timeframe, and simply entered what I had typically used in my Resume. However I am unsure whether it was that month, or the next that my employment began.)

2) Are grades a reason for people to be denied employment? I included a semester of college in my background check wherein my grades were admittedly abysmal. Could this potential destroy my chance of being hired? (I didn’t receive any kind of degree, nor did I say I did on my background check information sheet.)

3) Your Opinion::: My background information should be almost exactly accurate, my employment dates (except for the note above) should be right on, along with my competency in the areas that I explained in my Resume. My High School grades were above-average, whilst college was far below average for the semester I was in there. No criminal history either; if a company has gone this far to check my background, what are my chances of employment? ((Unless grades are a HUGE factor when employment is decided.))

I gotta say: The last five employers I’ve worked for conducted a “Background Check” on me as a condition of employment… I’m guessing that – that “background check” included by birthplace as well as legal status. I recently did a comprehensive background check that left me with pretty much nothing — also an incorrect home address. What the heck.

Some companies require that you allow them to give you a physical exam prior to offering employment. Do you feel it is a violation of your privacy? In addition they require a random drug test during your course of employment. And they will also do a background check! Is that invasive? Is it done for the safety of their work environment or simply to minimize other possible risks?

I had a second interview today at walmart home office for a customer service representative. I have went to court for three hot checks in the state of arkansas and am afraid its going to affect my chances on employment. They were just misdemeanors and I am in the process of paying them off. (I’ve been a stay at home Mom for 11 years and now I want to start some sort of career. Someone told me the call center would be a good way to just get my foot in the door). Their website says they do a "drug screening and a background check". Does anyone know if the "background check" includes a credit check? I am not a bad person, and certainly not a trouble maker, at ALL! But.. When I was 16/17 years old, I got into a bit of trouble. The most serious was underage drinking charges (one at 16, one at 18 and one at age 20) and fighting in public, which if I remember right, I had a couple under 18 and 2 after I turned 18. Other than that, I remember having a ticket for curfew violation, and some traffic tickets, nothing more. I haven’t been in ANY trouble since I turned 21. It’s been almost 10 years since I have had any trouble at all. Aside from a couple traffic tickets (not wearing a seatbelt a few years ago, that type of thing, nothing more serious).

This call center is doing an extensive background check, they told me to list anything, even speeding tickets. Wow! lol I honestly can not remember every ticket I have had in my life, and the dates. If I leave them out, will they not hire me if they find it? How far back to they look, do they go back before the 18th birthday? Am I going to NEVER be able to get a job in my life because of a few mistakes I made about 10 years ago? I’ve never had a felony, never had a charge for anything related to theft/fraud and the like. I don’t know what to think!
Oh, and I must add, the fighting in public charges all relate back to an issue I had with someone. He retaliated because he didn’t get what he wanted, and had his female friends pick fights with me, which I tried to avoid, but ended up getting into a few fights after trying hard to avoid it. A person can only take so much, until she has to defend herself. SO, it’s not like i’m a fighter, trouble starter. Very opposite! lol

I recently got a new job after looking for 4 months. I was finally happy and I finally started getting all my bills caught back up.

When I went into work today my boss pulled me aside and asked if there was anything on the application I lied about. I told my boss no and she said she has no choice but to terminate my employment because i failed my background check. She told me it came back saying I had a felony from 12 years ago on it.

First off I have never been arrested in my life. 12 years ago I would of just turned 18 and I did get a speeding ticket and a seatbelt ticket around that time but never anything like this.

Now after all that looking for a job and going through applications and interviews im back at square one and more pissed off than ever because its not true.

Do I have any recourse as too my options. Im more than willing to do whatever it takes to get this fixed and hopefully it can be fixed fast and get my job back.

Can I find out who gave my employer the incorrect info and sue them? Do I really have a case?

I really dont know what to do if anyone could steer me in the right direction it would really help.

Back about 6yrs ago i was drunk and got arrested for domestic charges with my GF which is now my wife. when i was arrested i was charged with 3 felony charges , when it got done in court i was charged with Assault and criminal mischief. both misdemeanors…. im in the process to have this sealed and the paperwork has been sent to the judge. Should i disclose this info to the employer that im about to get the job with when i sign the background check paperwork? and do you think this might render my chance at getting a job?

I am just curious about the background check they do. I don’t have anything to hide…I can’t even remember the last time I got a traffic ticket. But what do they check in the background investigation? Past places of employment and things like that?

I’ve recently been selected to interview with blue cross blue shield of IL. They went over my resume with me over the phone, I passed the test and did well, now I’m getting interviewed tomorrow. My questions are as follows:

1. will they do a background check after the interview or do you think they’ve already done it?

2. does the background check consist of past employment or just criminal?

3. if i were terminated from a previous job..like 3 jobs ago, will they find out why?

I was a full time officer with another department, so I was wondering if this new department will do a "full" background check like I had done on me with my old department, or will they do a minor background check due to my previous employment??

I’ve been struggling to get information about it and the DOJ of California is not very clear. I understand I need to get fingerprinted but how can I get a Background Check from out of state?? They’re live scan seems pretty straight forward for in-state people but not for people outsite.

Does anyone know how to get it?? Am I missing something??

I got a job offer at Wal-Mart and now I am waiting to hear back from them after they do my background check. I have no criminal history, but I am worried because they said they check past employment, and I stretched the truth a bit about how long I worked at one place because the place went out of business. Can they tell that I did this?
The reason I said I worked longer at this place is because the place doesn’t actually exist anymore… it was a small business and it’s out of business now… so they can’t be called but can they pull up all my past W-2′s and see that I didn’t work there as long?

My current roommate is now showing her true colors, she is lying so much that it is ridiculous. She gave me 2 bad checks and she still haven’t paid her portion (security deposit and rent)..I told her because of this situation I want to do a background check because I am not comfortable with everything she is doing and saying..(lies after lies..)..She said she doesn’t the credit check and employment verification, but she will not sign for a criminal check. My husband was called by a potential employer for a pre-employment meeting regarding his background check. He had previously been given the job offer, already passed the drug screening. To our astonishment he was asked about a felony, that the Company they contracted to do the check, claimed they found, said it happened in Jan of 2001, stating it was a DWI with involuntary manslaughter that he was sentenced to serve 10 years, but only served 120 days. This is absolutely FALSE!!! My husband is an engineer and was in his senior year of college. We went directly to the Criminal Clerk of Courts and obtained a official sealed copy of his criminal record & w/only 1 small misdemeanor that’s from a traffic accident for failure to stop in 1994, thats all. Hes never ever, even had a DWI.
What in the world can we do to FIX this horrifying problem?

Additional information on my case. I was never been arrested. She just went to court to file D.V against me and tried to get restraining order against me. There was no fiscal evidence nor witness. About 2 years ago, I worked at Target and stupidly stole some calculators which came out to 0. It was a one time mistake and I was caught by the Loss Prevention Manager. Usually they would call the police on this but he has been watching me for 3 weeks before confronting me and I did not steal after that. He just made me sign a guilty admission and to pay back the amount within 6 months. I agreed to it and was terminated. I paid the fee but a year late.
Now the question is, since no police was involve and I was not taken to jail, would this show up in my job employment history? I have other jobs afterwards but none ask for a background check. Just recently I got a great paying job but they will do a background check. Please advise, thank you

I was offered a job and as long as I pass the background check I am hired. The job is an entry level industrial labor position. The concern I have is back in March I was arrested. My wife and I had a shoving match and I got Domestic Violence and also was tagged with a Protection Order violation making a phone call to her the day I was served papers. For my current employment, I started in July of 2004 and I must not have been thinking correctly or made a typo or something because on my resume it states 2003. I am going through a background check for an airline.
I was arrested a few years ago when I was a minor. The crime I was charged with was a felony, but I was never convicted. It was instead reduced to a misdomeanor disorderly conduct. A few months after that, the entire record was expunged. I was told that it was off my record forever and I didn’t need to answer yes on applications where it asks if you’ve ever been convicted of a felony.

Im seventeen now but over the summer I worked for a company for only two months and I got fired and when filling out applications my parents pretty much told me not to include that I ever had a job since more than likely I would never get hired if I had gotten fired before. Multiple people have said they wouldnt because when they do a background check after youve turned eighteen your slate is pretty much clean.

My company sent me an employment disclosure and authorization form so that they can do a background check on me. The form says:
A consumer report or reports will be obtained on you for employment purposes. It may include an "investigative consumer report" that includes information as to your character, general reputation and personal characteristics. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Ac, you have a right to request disclosure of the nature and scope of the report, which involves personal interviews with sources such as employers, educational or training institutions you attended, references and law enforcement agencies.
Does this mean that they will be doing a credit check as well???

I applied for a job with a warehouse company, everything seemed like it was going very well in the interview process. The next day I had found out that failed the background check and was ineligible for hire. I am 18, and have had 4 jobs in my employment history, and I had to fix an error in my traffic record. This company that offered me a job is currently doing a background check on me….I can’t start until it clears. Well, I lied about the length of employment on one of my past jobs, and it seems they are having trouble verifying this job….it was an insurance sales job I got after college; I worked there for about a month till I realized I wasn’t cut out for it….but I stated I was there for a year. My would-be manager called me the other day and asked if I had that insurance company’s address because they are having trouble verifying that I worked there.

So they say that it pays to be honest. Should I call her back and explain to her that the reason they are having trouble verifying that I worked there is because I lied about how long I worked there? And then explain the reason I lied was because I didn’t want there to be a huge gap in my employment history. Do you think they would forgive me and still give me the job for coming out and being honest with them?

An arrest was reported on my background check for employment. It is true that I was arrested nearly two and a half years ago for a dui, which is what the report shows. However, it is inaccurate that the status of the case is waived, which is what the report shows. This gives the false impression that I am in the process of being sentenced.

In fact, the status of the case that they used for their information is from the preliminary hearing at the magisterial level, shortly after my arrest in 2007. The online document clearly shows the case disposition (dated 1/2008) as waived, and the status of the case as adjudicated, or closed, because it was waived at that time to the court of common pleas. In case anybody hasn’t noticed, this is 2010. Does it take two years to go to court for a dui? In any state?

At the courthouse level there is no record of my case. It was expunged after successful completion of ARD. For some reason, there is a glitch in the system, which I am currently in the process of trying to get corrected, so that this information is no longer available for public consumption and misinformation.

The second error is a "possible match". It’s someone who shares my first name only, shares my birth date, and lives in a state I have not visited since I was an infant. I hardly think I could have been capable of doing anything criminal when I was 11 months old.

I am 99% positive that this purveyor of misinformation (aka, the credit reporting agency — now there’s a possible match!) did not use the social security number that I provided to fact check my criminal history before releasing said misinformation to my possibly soon to be ex-potential employer.

How do I dispute these? I’m not sure that I want to forward a copy of my court order for release, dismissal and expungement (for privacy reasons) to a company that is so careless about the information they distribute, all the while including a disclaimer about it’s reliability and accuracy, and at the same time denying any responsibility for said unreliable and inaccurate information. If I performed that poorly at my job, I would have been fired a long time ago!

Is it up to me to prove that the information on my background check is inaccurate and incomplete, or is it up to the credit reporting agency?

So its been a little over a week and she stil hasnt called me back . I free of any drugs ( except for a prescription drug tht i havent even tken i a while ) and my background check is clean. So will it be on my background check?
No, did not go to jail. I paid for the citation.

I applied for a job as a recreational aid at a senior citizen home and on my application they asked " In the past seven year have you ever been convicted of a felony." I checked no. I do have a Misdamenor for possesion under 20 grams and my desposition was community service. I have always been told if your honest on application your past will not be used against you. ( ANd I was ) But they did not ask me if I had any misdamenors, so I when my background check comes back I am sure they will see it b/c it is in public records, but they can’t hold it against be for not saying anything when technically they did not ask right ?

Well I had my interview with Home Depot and did my drug test/gave them permission for a background check.How long does this take till they will call me back?Its been a week and I was wondering if you would include weekends during the process?Would weekends slow it down at all?thanks!

I recently applied to a job that requires a background check. I have no criminal convictions and good credit but on the application it asked for my former employment background. I went back to my three previously ranked jobs which have been the past 15years. In between that time from 1996 I was employed by a company for 3 months but didn’t mention them on the application. It was a horrific and negative experience for me and I walked off the job. Should I have written this job on the application? It was so long ago but I didn’t want to explain to the company how negative it was for me. I was not sure how far a company goes back to look into my job history.

Im trying to get an apartment with my boyfriend. We will have the apartment as soon as they do a background check and employment verification. I went in and talked to a lady who handles the applications. I asked about the background check, as did my boyfriend when he talked to the landlord. We got into it bad when we were going through alot around 9 months ago, and i called the cops. I wasn’t in danger nor was i scared, just mad. We have since been through counseling and rarely get into fights anymore. We told the lady about what was on his record and how it would be gone in a few months because he got a plea deal to stay out of trouble for a year and he would have a clean record again. I asked the secretary if it would be a problem and she said most likely no, and i said even if its still on there as a felony, again she said it still shouldn’t be a problem if that’s what it was for. Do they just do the check so they don’t get rapists, murderers, and drug dealers in their apartments? Also, i used to know the name of a site where you could look up free records and see what the person was charged with for free, but i cant find it, anyone know?

It is associated with my name and correct date of birth. I have a very rare name so the chances of it being another person with my name is very low. I doesn’t really make sense to me that a company does creidit checks for employment. I completely understand about a background check, but what could there be on credit check that is not on a background check?

I currently live in Illinois and carry an Illinois CDL with HAZMAT. My current license expires in February. My main question is, if I go through the background check for HAZMAT in Illinois (which is almost 0), will I, when I move to Indiana, have to get ANOTHER background check for ANOTHER 0 in order to keep it?

I filled out an application for a job today and had an interview. I signed a release to do a background/credit check. They asked for my date of birth on that release form. I left it blank. I havent been offered the job, I was only there for my first interview. Ok, last thursday I got job offer with walmat as a cahier. I also let them know that I have a mesdimeanor that I commited in 2009. the manager said a background check has to be done. He said it could take up to 2 to 3 weeks. I thought they take only couple of days. I recently have been technically hired on at a call center. I’ve filled the documents out and have gone through the drug screening. Only thing left to "pass" is the background check. I have nothing illegal in my background or anything like that, it’s just for previous employment I put down a job I had during college at a kiosk in the mall. It was during a couple holiday months and the owner was desperate for a worker so he hired me right away and paid in cash, just a little less than minimum wage. So I never had any W-2s or pay stubs. My question is — If I’m going for a job, I of course have to put down I have a misdemeanor c for disorderly conduct, but do I need to state it was for theft or does the disorderly conduct take care of that?

A few years ago, I plead guilty to two Class C misdemeanors for being drunk. I read on a website that Texas state law only requires only violations worse than Class C misdemeanors to be reported to the state. Would those show up on a background check even though they’re not reported to the state?
In response to mhmd, I got cited for public intoxication and urinating in a public place. It was in municipal court.

I was arrested for a minor DUI/MIP a couple months ago but I still haven’t gone through the courts and officially convicted for it. Also, my license was suspended. Would all this show up on a background check? I heard that most employers don’t even do the check they just want to see if you’d agree to it.

I found out that my supervisor at work did a background check on me without my permission or me signing anything. She was able to pull this off because she has "connections" at the Sheriff’s office. I always thought that there is some type of privacy law or something that protects people against things like this. What can I do? The other day, I got a phone call from the investigating agency asking for W-2 forms for the last ten years. Why so much investigating for a very short job assignment? I asked them and all I am told is that is the way the company wants it. Sure, but why?

In march 2007 I was arrested on suspicion of DUI. In July 2007 my lawyer got the DUI dropped and pleaded to misdemeanor reckless driving. I just graduated from college and am looking for jobs and some companies ask on forms if you’ve been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony other than a minor traffic violation. Would this reckless driving be considered a minor traffic violation, and will it show up on my background check?

Here’s the situation: I recently started working as a caretaker at a home for people with developmental/physical disabilities. A year ago, I was committed to a mental institution for a week because a psychiatrist mistook my self-injury for suicidal tendencies. I have scars all over my arms from the intense depression and anxiety I went through, and am going through (to a lesser degree) now.

My question is: Could this affect my job? They will run a background check, and I know the stay at the institution will show up. My employer may or may not ask me about it. I really don’t know anything about how businesses handle these things. And, because I spend a lot of my time bathing/changing the clients at this home, I have to roll up my sleeves at some point; and one of my coworkers is bound to see it eventually.

I’d just like to know what the business could/couldn’t do about this, and how much privacy I have. Is it a problem if it doesn’t affect my job performance?

I took a temporary job for a couple of days and had to undergo a drug and background check. That was two months ago. About five weeks later, the company wanted me back again for a couple of days. The staffing service said I would have to do the whole thing over again because the test results expire after 30 days. I did not want to go through all this again for two days of employment. Is this really true or did they have some other reason for wanting me to do the tests over again?

I was kicked out of the military and received an other than honorable discharge (not dishonorable or bad conduct) basically for hooking up buds with extra equipment. I was fortunate because the crime was not too bad and though I was charged, the charges were dismissed and I admitted to wrongdoing but not too anything specific. I just want to add some things. I’m a VERY over-proptective mom and the whole idea of getting a babysitter is making my stomach ache. I reside in Florida. I was cited with an Ordinance Violation 10 years ago (I was 17, which is an adult in the state of WI) in the state of Wisconsin. I paid a fine and never went to court or had any other repercussions. I was offered a job and they required me to submit to a finger-print background check. On the Background Check Auth and Release, it said ‘have you ever been or are you currently being tried for/charged with a misdemeanor or felony?’ so I answered ‘NO’ which is the truth either way since it isn’t even a misdemeanor on my background. I asked the clerk at the Municipal court and she said it is possible for it to show on a deep Background check BUT it would show as a citation, not a misdemeanor. At this point, what’s done is done and I am just curious of what others think. My boyfriend had an interview for a wonderful job. He’s pretty much got it, after they get the background check results in. He’s a a little worried, because he was arrested & charged for theft under 0, about a year ago. But when he went to court, the charges were dropped. We live in Tennessee. does it list the specific reason like say i had to go out of town and didn’t know i had work, or say i had to go for a family emergency. would it say that on the background check or would it just say that it was a no show?

Im going to be taking a healthcare class and one of the requirements to have a background check in order to take the class. Nothing advance or technical, just a simple, reliable service.

The civil suit was pertaining to a credit card issue. I called and spoke to the credit card folks, got the issue resolved immediately, and the suit was dropped. Does that mean it was "dismissed?" There was never a judgment rendered and I never had to go to court. I want to know if it will show up on a background check, or if it will negatively affect my likelihood of being hired as a teacher.

I have plead guilty to a summary offense retail theft (legally has about the weight of a traffic citation) four and a half years ago. It was a rough time for me as I was going through a divorce and my world was falling apart.

I never did anything like this before or anything like that after. I was a always a straight A student and have never tried drugs or gotten into any other trouble. Never even had a speeding ticket before.

Anyway, I kids go to a charter school. I am very involved in their lives, and I want to volunteer. According to Pennsylvania law, a background check must be done on anyway who is in the school including volunteers. I am really embarrassed about this and worry how this would affect the relationship that I have with the teachers and school. I also worry about my ex-wife somehow finding out.

Do these background checks just look for things like felonies, aggrevated assaults or child sex type offenses or are they on anything including my offense.

I love my kids, and I love my career, albeit in a much different way. I have given very serious thought to staying home with them again, but I would be giving up a lot of things, namely health insurance, that we just can’t live without. So keep in mind that everyone’s situation is unique and it doesn’t mean that us working moms are in any way selfish, or love our kids any less. Here’s the thing: I just got hired at sears, and they are going to do a background check on me over the weekend. Long story short, I did not know that I even had a court date, let alone a warrant for failure to appear in court. The court date was for an unpaid ticket that I had about 4 years ago, and they suspended my licsence because I did not show up for court, but I did not know that they issued a warrant. I could be totally wrong about the mom and be jumping to conclusions, which is why I wanted a background check. When I say the mom seems very nice, I mean it. She’s not only friendly but she’s very well put together and always looks nice and clean. I’m not judging her on her past, but the info I recieved was that mom was in prison RECENTLY (as within the last couple of months). If that’s the case, then it worries me because it’s very possible she could relapse. I know people can change, I’ve seen it happen, but I also know the toll drugs can take on one’s life, sometimes causing a life long battle with them. As far as I’m concerned, my daughter’s safety is the most important thing.

However, I have been convicted of misdemeanor corruption of minors at the age of 18 during my senior year of hs. It has been four years since I committed this offense and I have taken some steps in the right direction. I have maintained a very high GPA and have been involved in various campus organizations at school. My ultimate goal is to seek a pardon several years down the road, assuming I have no future arrests, of course, but I do not know how much my criminal background will affect my current job prospects. I worked a few months when I was 19, then I moved in with my fiance, and was basically a "homemaker", as he did not want me to work. I just handle housekeeping, cooking, paying bills, running errands. This was 10 years ago, and in the past 10 years I have been a homemaker. The only job i’ve had is "self employment" (babysitting and cleaning houses). I did take a temp job for a couple months back in 2006. Other than that, and the job I hate in ’99, nothing worth putting on an application. (Had a couple convenience store jobs over the years, but not long lasting, due to only having one car and having conflict with HIS hours.)

We now have a second vehicle, and I am DESPERATE to get a job outside the home! LOL

Can they verify the length of time you were employed with a company, and the EXACT dates? I called the restaurant I worked at back in ’99 to get the exact dates of hire and leaving, but they say they do not keep records past a few years. So, i’m not sure what the date were! Will the companies doing the background checks be able to find the info even so? If I just guess that the dates, will that look horrible?

Also, any advice as to how I should explain the huge employment gaps.

I had a traffic infraction (not a misdemenor or felony) and I wanted to know if it would show up on a background check. I would think not because infractions are not criminal offenses, they are civil ones.

I don’t have anything to hide, but I didn’t list one of the jobs I had in high school because the experience I gained there didn’t pertain to the job I was applying for and there were only 4 spaces to list previous work experience so I chose to write down the places that were more like the job I was applying for. I just don’t want the potential new employer to think that I’m hiding something because I didn’t list it… if I had that job when I was 17 (started the job and quit the job when I was 17) will it come up on a background check? I’m 20 years old now, so it’s within 7 years…

Background checks also show previous employment history. Depending on what type of background check is being conducted. I got the impression from the paperwork I filled out that it’d be check both criminal history and my employment history.

Has anyone ever undergone a background check for OfficeMax? How far do they go back and what do they look for?

My identity was stolen years ago and I just found out.
I have been applying for jobs like crazy for months (hundreds at this point) with postive interviews and feedback but they just won’t hire me.
I have an excellent work history, excellent professional refrences, College educated(3.96GPA) never been fired from a job, an as far as I know I have no criminal record, clean driving record (never had a ticket or accident) and never have I ever been to court.

I wonder if at this point if someone has used my identity and there will be somthing found in my background check to reveal why employers refuse to hire me.

I apply for any job that fits my skills and now I am at the point of applying for anthing that I know I am capable of doing or fits my qualifications.

MY license was suspended for not paying traffic tickets. The background check company said its being checked on a county level.
