I found a great job. Today was my first day as an intake coordinator/ administrative assistant for a local child advocacy center. I absolutely love this job. I want to someday become an advocate myself. Great pay, great hours, great people, location, etc. It is all around perfect for me. This is the first time that I feel like I am actually contributing. I also have a baby, whom I am trying to support. I feel a connection to this job, because I love children. Here’s the problem- I am an ex- drug offender. The crime is simple possession of a controlled substance. I have been in treatment for 2 years. It is 2 years in the past (I am 20 years old). Today when I was about to leave, my supervisor gave me some paperwork to take home. New employment papers, which included the submission for a background check. Do you think that the director will understand, that I will be able to keep this wonderful job? I have to keep this job, I could always find another, but I want this. Please help!!!!!

I had a group interview yesterday for an entry-level job (there were 6 others besides me). The interviewers liked a couple of my answers & i got a favorable impression from them. They emailed me the same day asking me to move through the application process & fill out background check and pre-employment forms. They didn’t say I got it for sure, but does it sound like it??

I only worked for my current job for 3 months, and I knew it wasn’t a good fit when I first started, but thought will give it a try, and still have the same feeling 3 months later. It was a mistake, and now I am trying to find a new job. I am wondering if I omit this employment history, will the future employer’s background check show that 3 months and give me trouble? What will be better to include it and try to explain to the new employer why I had to look after 3 months or simply omit it?

Every job I have ever had in my adult life has required an initial drug test, and random drug tests after that and a background check as well as a credit check. All decent companies as well as the states and federal governments require these for employment. Why do so many people complain about this part of the application process?

I am interviewing with a Fortune 500 company. I did pizza delivery for about a month back in May and I was terminated due to an altercation with a co-worker.
If they run a background check will that show up? Now I know they give you a form to list your previous employment, would it show up on there? Could I just leave the job off the form?

A friend of mine (really it’s a friend not me) had a car repossession on their credit report in October of 2002. Well he recently applied for a job and had a recent interview. He received a notice from Trans Union letter him know there was a background employment check that was conducted and there was one public record found (the repossession). Would that prevent him from getting a job? He has asked me if I thought they wouldn’t give him the job because of it.

Well I got a letter in the mail today and it said…" The Census Bureau processes all applicants for temporary census jobs through pre-employment name check against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Justice Information Services Division’s criminal file. This check resulted in a tentative match between you and an arrest record in the FBI criminal history index. Because this identification is based on descriptors only, there is a chance that this record does not concern you. Therefor you may do one of the following:
A) If you do not dispute the identity of the arrest record in question, provide OFFICIAL COURT documentation on any and all arrest(s) and or conviction(s) in your past;
B) If you wish to dispute the identity of the arrest record in question, you may provide a set of original fingerprints. Call xxx-xxx-xxxx to obtain a fingerprint card and and return envelope from the office which you applied.
ok now I do have a background I got in trouble for a Public Intoxication and disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. I ended up spending the night in jail got out. Had to go to AA and community service and pay a fine. This was almost 5-6 yrs ago. This was the only time I ever ever got in trouble is this what they are referring to, I am not sure what it is I should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I just graduated college and am currently applying to a variety of jobs; some of which are government jobs which I’m positive will do an employment background check. I currently work for my dad’s business, which is a branch of a bigger organization. He compensates me buy paying all of my bills. Because of this, in an employment background check of the organization, my name would not show up. Should I include that I’m working for my dad’s business on a resume? And how would I go about doing so professionally?

I am applying for jobs, and have a interview scheduled for tomorrow, am over 18. and was wondering if I get hired if i will have to wait for them to perform a background check?
I live in Illinois, if it differs from state- to state.
I remember when i worked at a theater the managers were looking for people under 18 to hire so they didn’t have to do a background check and could hire them quicker.
I didn’t say anyone told me they required it, I was asking people on here because it wasn’t something covered in civics class.

I want to apply at a starbucks, jamba juice, or at a retailer (part-time). Will they run a background check on me to see my employment history? Or will they just call my references? or not do either?

& also does education and previous employment come up on the background check? I recently had one done for a regular sales associate job at a gift store.

I already got a verbal offer, now all the documents have been transferred to their HR department. I dont know if they would contact my past employers and verify my employment history even I got my verbal offer? Also I didnt provide any references or contact info to them. Only the company name and my position. How high are the chances of calling my past employers?

I don`t have any identification (State, school, driver`s liscense, etc). Is there an alternative that I can use to get a background check? I went for an interview and the job says I need a background check. They didn`t ask for my ss so apparantely they require the person who wants the job to do it themselves…I know where to get one I just need to know if there is an alternative to it without id.

I thought background check might display your credit report and criminal records………
but not necessarily prior employment.
It is my understanding that employers verify your work history through the process of calling your references.
Is that correct?

I was 17years old and with my friends and we shopliftied . We were in another state from which we live. I went to court and had to pay a fine. I just had a interview with this company and I know they are going to do a back ground check. I live in a different state from were i shoplifted. I did a background check for my state and nothing came up but when I went to the state where I was arrested It came up as a misdeanor. The job I have applied for is located in another state but they are going to open a office where I live. I just want to know if they will be able to see the shoplifting on my record? Do you think they will check just my state or all over?
It happened in 2003
The company only has my resume and they have’t asked me to fillout a application yet but I went online and the application doesn’t mention anything about background checks. When i was arrested they didn’t send me to a juvinele jail so does that mean I was charged as an adult. IT happened in the state of Georgia

I am being interviewed by Mitsubishi and part of it requires a background check. I have two items I most concerned about. A bankruptcy (with house loss) 2 years ago and the owner’s name a company I used to work with. It was owned by my parents and usually people think that since I worked for them, I didn’t work as hard as I did there.
Will these two items come up on the check? I imagine the bankruptcy will, but would that really affect this?

Has anyone ever been sent for a drug test and background check after an interview and then not been offered a job? (This is assuming you’re not a criminal or drug user) This happened to me last Friday and I haven’t heard back yet. I know background checks take a little while but I’m pretty anxious to hear from them. It seems dumb to pay to test everyone they interview but maybe they do?
I will also add that this is for Cox Communications – so if anyone works for Cox it would be great to hear what you think. Thanks everybody.

Problem being, I might have been off by a month or so with the time-frames for working at these past employers. especialy if the individuals hold qualifications such as a degree, HND, A-Levels, Btec or other relavent rcognised certification – can they like, throw you on the streets and make you sweep roads ?
I have a degree, abiet a not very good one – but its a degree.
Also I have a GNVQ in Advanced Science (with pass) and an A Level at grade D.
I also have the equivalent of 8 GCSE’s under my belt, 4 of which are C’s and one grade B.
I have next to no work experience though – my last job was 8 years ago and i was 2 hours short of being registered a full time employee, although I suspect my employers at the time registered me as one nonethelss.
I wonder if Job Centre people can dirty up your name if you refuse to do work they bully you into doing, i.e somebody like me being asked to work at KFC or be a Car Park Ticket Warden (something obviously uncomplimentary to my educational background and worth).
can they bully and intimidate me into a line of employement I dont want to go into – bringing me to my final question, i will take my goddamn time to find suitable work for myself – but that will mean staying on JSA for a while unfortunately. Ive been paid twice so far and expect to be paid JSA again today.
Can the Job centre folk dirty up my name, history by informing the government over the telephone that ‘hes not accepting the job offer we gave him – he wont work at KFC’ , and then get the police to break down my door and beat me up over it ?
i dont want to get a criminal record because I didnt comply to bullying by job centre people.

I applied for a job yesterday that required a background check. I was wondering if jobs I had before I turned 18 will come up? I don’t have anything to hide, but I didn’t list one of the jobs I had in high school because the experience I gained there didn’t pertain to the job I was applying for and there were only 4 spaces to list previous work experience so I chose to write down the places that were more like the job I was applying for. I just don’t want the potential new employer to think that I’m hiding something because I didn’t list it… if I had that job when I was 17 (started the job and quit the job when I was 17) will it come up on a background check? I’m 20 years old now, so it’s within 7 years…
Thanks for any help.
Background checks also show previous employment history. Depending on what type of background check is being conducted. I got the impression from the paperwork I filled out that it’d be check both criminal history and my employment history.

Personally, I have a BS in Anthropology with minors in music, geology, and American Indian Studies where I emphasized archeology and museum work. I am about 10 credits from a history degree too. I have been a stay-at-home-mom for 11 years off and on (off–I worked clerical jobs to make a little money here and there, but I don’t want to do secretary jobs anymore). I want to use my education. I also enjoy working with kids and am a volunteer in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Next year I can work part-time, but the following year I will be looking for full-time work. I am very adaptable. What would you recommend?

In NY the law on hiring people with criminal record is the employer can not deny you unless the record is something that is directly related to the job. Like a bank robber can not work at a bank. Do most employers in NY honor the law.

The record of the incident is supposed to be sealed, but will it still come back on the background check even though it’s been less than 6 months? Please help!

There are a zillion places listed on a web search, but I need one that’s trustworthy and secure.
I need to look up some things on my exhusband who is fighting me for custody of our daughter. (I left once he started taking his abusive nature out on her and now it’s a multi-thousand dollar legal mess.)
Thanks,
L

A friend is applying for a job and the background check came back with addresses that were listed as fraudlent. Two years ago his identiy was stolen and police reports were filled and everythign should be cleared by now. Can the employer deny him the job because of this? Is there any action that can be done? The credit reports are coming up clear when he checks them himself.

I am applying for jobs and do not want to list my most recent job on my application, will my potential employer still be able to find out about my previous jobs by doing a background check.

I applied, passed three interviews and the final hiring manager acted like I had the job, he even sent me home with some store pamphlets to read up on so I would know about the credit cards they offer to customers. He didn’t give me a start date but he said he would run my background check and they would call me. Should I count on having the job? How long does a background check take?

So 2 weeks ago I was offered this great job with this great company, but I can’t start until the background check clears. Well, I lied on my application about this one job I had several years ago…it was an insurance sales position, which I claimed to work at for a year, when I really only did it for a month or so. My would-be manager called me today and said they are having a problem verifying that I worked for that insurance company, and asked if I knew the company’s address…I figured if I get caught, oh well….so I gave it to her. That job was 100% commissioned, so I was an independent sales rep….so I wasn’t on any payroll or anything, and I had to fill out a 1099 rather than a W-2. Is there ANY possibility at all that maybe they will verify that I did work there, but since they won’t be able to tell for how long, that they will still give me the job??

What kind of program or service do they use to search for an applicant’s former employer information? Do they only call the employers listed on your application? There are a couple short-term employers that I’ve had in the past that I don’t ever list because I didn’t leave on good terms (I quit without notice). I used to work in HR and we only called employers on the application, we didn’t do indepth searches. I’m just wondering how corporate employers do their background checks for employment history.

I’ve recently accepted a job offer with a governmental agency, and I’m curious to know if they do or allowed to check IRS or tax records in their pre-employment screenings. I was once told that searching IRS/tax records was prohibited by the 4th amendment (unlawful searches and seizures) but I’m unsure. Any help?

Like i said, i think it was a level eight. First offense. They told me it WOULDNT be picked up by employers who perform background checks, but i just applied for a job and something came up. they havent told me yet but it has me worried. It happened when i was 17 and im now 21, turning 22 in less than a month. I wasn’t "convicted" of the felony but they used some other term, that i don’t remember. So if anyone could tell me the term and if it can be picked up in background checks id appreciate it.

Is there a penalty or is it bad to lie on a background check application for a job?
I said that I used to work somewhere and I did not, I just lie so that my resume can look better.
I got the job and I’m starting my orientation on 4/14, and they are doing my background check. Do you think they are going to fired me or what?

I recently just got hired 3 weeks ago by a temporary employer, but the job I wanted at Verizon had called me and we had a phone interview. They do employment verification background checks, and I tried to give them all the jobs I had in the last seven years. I didn’t give them the new job I just got 3 weeks ago. I filled out a W2 form for the new one, but when Verizon sees the employment check, will they see the new job that I just started? I probably should have just listed it too.

This past Monday I was offered a job position with this great company….but I can’t start until the background check clears. I’m a lil paranoid right now because I lied on my resume about some work experience I had. I’m worried it will come up and I wont get the job. So if you have failed a background check, how did they let you know? Should I call them to check on the status, and act like nothing happened, and ask when will I be able to start?

Does this mean a person must have a clear history? What if you’re honest in the interview and tell the person about prior convictions? I am currently, I’m asking this question because I have 2 DUI’s and been noticing the "must pass a background check" on job boards.
Posted in People Background check by admin: September 20, 2010
Or, is it mainly just a criminal history background check? My credit is far from perfect, and I’m nervous I won’t get the job because of it (even though it’s already been offered to me contingent on the background check).

okay, so I applied for a government job (with department of interior) and I got the job pending that my background check comes back with no problems. It been 10 days since I submitted my paper work to conduct a background check and I still have no gotten a call from them. Also all my references has not yet been contacted and neither has my previous employers.
What exactly do they check? I do not have any criminal record whatsoever and my credit score is excellent. is there anything else that I should be worried about? I did move from the time i submitted my paperwork till now, should i tell them or is that not relevant to my background check?

I ask because I know that if a potential employer calls a former employer you were fired from, it is unlawful for that employer to give out that kind of information. Apparently, they’re not even allowed to give out the salary you made.
But, what I don’t know is if the company you were fired from releases the information–the fact that you were fired–to background check companies … or puts it in some sort of database that any background check company can access.
I’m really gearing for this one job and I don’t want to have that one job that I worked for more than 3 years ago to make me ineligible for this job. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
I’m not asking if they call my past employer. I’m asking if it will show up on a background employment check. Ya know, those companies that do nothing but background checks on individuals for other companies for hiring purposes…
I’m also not asking if they check. I KNOW they check cuz an AT&T employee emailed me telling me which kinds of background checks they do: (county, federal, etc), a driving check, and an employment check. Those were his exact words.
I emailed him explaining that I was working with a credit agency which would show why I am delinquent on some of my credit cards. And he wrote back thanking me, telling me he didn’t think they did a credit check, but that they did the above ones.

I have been working at my current job for close to two months and they just informed me that their is an employment discrepancy on my background check and I would need to submit more info for them to complete the background check.
When I applied for this job I was asked to complete a background check with employment verification. While doing the employment verification I didn’t know the exact dates for previous jobs so I took a wild guess. Now two months later the company is asking me to submit a W-2 or paystub to show that I worked the dates that I stated. They contacted the company and it shows that I worked for that company but the dates that I submitted were off by a few months of the actual date.
Can they terminate my employment because the dates don’t match up? They have proof that I worked at that particular job but they want me to verify that I worked the dates that I stated. What should I do?

I’m not talking calling references, I mean doing the formal background check that they do with the background check company to see your real work history.
I know that you have to agree with it and sign off for it, but how often do they actually follow through on it? Or, because it’s retail do they really not care about it? If they are really desperate for workers, will they just skip that step?
Who is more likely to do it, small stores or big stores?

Hello, I was just offered a very nice job working for a Telecom company baring a drug screening and background check. My most recent employer was a friend of my fathers and he paid me "under the table" for the 6 months I worked for him. I did not disclose this on my application (because it was not asked). The background check company says that it verifies employment/education/criminal history etc… Am i gonna be OK?? If they call my former boss he will totally vouch for me, but i am still very worried as this job pays nearly twice what every other job I am looking at right now does. Please let me know what you think.
I think you misunderstood me. I did put the job on my application and on my Resume, but if they try to confirm my employment using tax records, it isnt going to show up.

I’ve been waiting to take care of it until I had the money. My question is…Will this show up on a "Criminal" background check or is this just for felonies? If it does show up, will this sort of "blemish" be harmful for a retail job?

And if I were to use a private mailbox address on the application, substituting # for PMB, would the background check find out?
And this is just a normal retail job.
Thanks you two for the real answers (what’s up with the spam?), the reason I’m using a private mailbox instead of a PO box is because the private mailbox’s address looks like a normal residential street address. As for why I can’t give a real address, it’s because I’m homeless.

Does it always mean do not bother applying if you are a felon ?
Or is it just to let you know they will look into your past and does not mean they will not hire you if you are a felon ?
Or just to keep felons from applying ?
How do companies perform a background check ?
Would majority of companies (labor/warehouse/delivery) be more interested in a persons past employment history than a drug related felony from 7 years ago ?
It is my brother he see "background check" and does not even bother applying.

In California: ?
a failure to appear in a traffic court because of a traffic ticket that was put on a person’s DMV record by mistake by the court house and /or dmv, would that show up on your background search when you are looking for a job? (a failure to appear in a traffic court, in California is considered a misdemeanor)
Second, if your car was repoed, would that show up as a judgment or something or some kind of court order or law breaking act , that could show up on your credit report, or background report for employers to see ?

If money enters employee’s account on a day-off or holiday, all payment processing procedures have to be completed during the next working day.
* Branch Manager receives invoices for each transaction every 14 days. This document is a confirmation of transaction validity, and in case of any (if any at all) unforeseen circumstances it will evidence your personal non-participation. if you get fired from a (terrible) part time job, does it show up when prospective employers do a background check?
does it go into some file or something??
I got fired from borders for swiping my rewards card for customers. I really didn’t do it much… and I got "fired" on my last day, so I never told anyone.

If I omitted a few jobs will this be ok? Does the background check show all jobs I have held or do they just call up references I have listed?

I applied for a position with the government, but before they can offer me the job, they have to do a security clearance background check–including a conversation with my current employer. How do I help my employer feel good about this, so I don’t lose my position until the other job comes through? (assuming I’d even take the job when I get the offer).

I am trying to get a job at a hospital for a patient care tech and I have prior experience about 5-6 years ago in another state at another hospital. I think that HR is having a hard time getting verifying. I do have proof though since as tax forms. If they cannot find anything will i just be out of a job? Anyone that works for HR in a hospital. Thanks!!

I applied for a job and was told they wanted to interview me, and was asked to send in more documents. A few of those documents will take me some time to get (such as the criminal background check) and I asked if it was okay if I sent the documents I already have first, and then send the other documents as soon as I get them.
This was all right, but I’m wondering what to write when I send the first bunch of documents? Would it be all right to write "Enclosed documents: …." and then below "Pending documents: …."
Or what would you write?
