I found a great job. Today was my first day as an intake coordinator/ administrative assistant for a local child advocacy center. I absolutely love this job. I want to someday become an advocate myself. Great pay, great hours, great people, location, etc. It is all around perfect for me. This is the first time that I feel like I am actually contributing. I also have a baby, whom I am trying to support. I feel a connection to this job, because I love children. Here’s the problem- I am an ex- drug offender. The crime is simple possession of a controlled substance. I have been in treatment for 2 years. It is 2 years in the past (I am 20 years old). Today when I was about to leave, my supervisor gave me some paperwork to take home. New employment papers, which included the submission for a background check. Do you think that the director will understand, that I will be able to keep this wonderful job? I have to keep this job, I could always find another, but I want this. Please help!!!!!

I applied to a police department and i am waiting for my background check to be complete. When i filled out the background, i forgot to include a job that I received and filled paper work for, but did not end up doing the job. Will this appear on my employment history as being "fired" even though i did not work a single hour and/or collect a single cent?

However I can’t remember some specific employment dates, and I was also fired at one of my previous jobs for slapping a friend on the butt, (my employer had said that I could indeed reference them and we left with no hard feelings, but insisted they had to fire me because they didn’t want that type of behavior to spread into the company. They said they would put down that I had quit but I want to make sure if they put I was fired that my storys stay straight.) so what are the best companys to hire for a background check on myself? and what comes up on a background check for me being fired for my job for what I did? Oh and any advice for those who are police officers on the process? I have a squeaky clean record with only 1 traffic ticket and no arrests, no drug and alcohol history.

The case was dismissed and the terms of the probation were completed. I am now in the first year of the five year waiting period and am trying to get a job. On the employment application I was told that employers still look at the charge as a conviction. So would it be better to disclose it up front seeing as they will do a background check and and see the charge although it did not result in a conviction and the case was discharged or dismissed?

I showed inconclusive on pre-employment drug test and was not hired for job in 2008. I was paid a bit for a one day training that I attended, but no more. Can the police background check find out about this if it is not on my application? I was never employed as the test showed inconclusive. I wanted to retest but they were going to make me pay for it. Found different job instead. Any ideas out there? Preferably from someone with applicable experience?

I had been at a job for at least 7 years before being laid off, so I do have some job stability reflected but there are two jobs that I left after a day because it just wasn’t going to work out.

Every job I have ever had in my adult life has required an initial drug test, and random drug tests after that and a background check as well as a credit check. All decent companies as well as the states and federal governments require these for employment. Why do so many people complain about this part of the application process?

I was already offered the job at Fremont Bank, submitted to a drug test and everything. In my application I lied about a past job, or rather claimed that my reason for leaving was that I "sought career growth". I was informed that they will conduct a consumer report through Employee Relations, Inc. My orientation day is tomorrow, and I was offered the job 3 days ago. Would they have conducted a background check (employment verification) by now or should I still be worried? I’m scared they’ll call that past employer and find out that I was actually fired rather than voluntarily quit.

I’m in the process of enlisting in the National Guard and got curious about what shows up on the background check that is conducted before you swear in at MEPS.
What I have learned so far is that the background check they do looks at education and employment verification and criminal offenses and such. What I’m curious about is if you were fired from your job for something other than a criminal offense (like forgetting to mop the floor or something), will is show up on a background check? And is the background check conducted before the contract is handed to you to sign?

I just started a commission only job in California selling door to door telecommunication packages It’s strange that I previously worked at a national retail chain before which I had a drug test – paid by the employer But these people now want to charge the employee – for a background check – which I seriously doubt that they really did, and for the drug test These are some big bucks for someone having to do this kind of job

Many employment applications will state upfront and in unambiguous terms that there will be a drug test and background check required for employment at the firm and requests agreement to this. This one did not. In fact there was no formal application at all. Thus, how could drug testing be illegal in California. I see references to one or both of these checks indeed being illegal in some states, but I can’t spend the time to sort through every state, etc.
Where could I find information about "California law prohibits an employer from charging an employee for a background check" – references to specific official statutes, codes, etc?

I went to a interview for blockbuster and 2 days after they told me I had the job. The next week they gave me a schedule for the upcoming week. A day before I was supposed to start working they called me and said my background check didn’t come through. After about 2 weeks of calling them everyday to see if it came in they called me back and said they can not hire me due to my background check? I really don’t understand this. Is there something I can do or even talk to one of the managers about this? I do have a minor misdemeanor but I am not that same person anymore.

I had a second interview today at walmart home office for a customer service representative. I have went to court for three hot checks in the state of arkansas and am afraid its going to affect my chances on employment. They were just misdemeanors and I am in the process of paying them off. I filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy at the beginning of this month and last week I had an interview with a bank for a Universal Banker position. On Friday they called me and offered me the job and my salary and I accepted it. She said that they were going to do a background & employment check this week and I am supposed to start March 3. She did not say anything about doing a credit check, but can they take back their offer if they do see that I have filed for bankruptcy???

I interviewed for a job in a call center today, and will have the job, once my background check and drug test result comes back! I’m so happy about that! The only problem? That background check!

I am not a bad person, and certainly not a trouble maker, at ALL! But.. When I was 16/17 years old, I got into a bit of trouble. The most serious was underage drinking charges (one at 16, one at 18 and one at age 20) and fighting in public, which if I remember right, I had a couple under 18 and 2 after I turned 18. Other than that, I remember having a ticket for curfew violation, and some traffic tickets, nothing more. I haven’t been in ANY trouble since I turned 21. It’s been almost 10 years since I have had any trouble at all. Aside from a couple traffic tickets (not wearing a seatbelt a few years ago, that type of thing, nothing more serious).

This call center is doing an extensive background check, they told me to list anything, even speeding tickets. Wow! lol I honestly can not remember every ticket I have had in my life, and the dates. If I leave them out, will they not hire me if they find it? How far back to they look, do they go back before the 18th birthday? Am I going to NEVER be able to get a job in my life because of a few mistakes I made about 10 years ago? I’ve never had a felony, never had a charge for anything related to theft/fraud and the like. I don’t know what to think!
Oh, and I must add, the fighting in public charges all relate back to an issue I had with someone. He retaliated because he didn’t get what he wanted, and had his female friends pick fights with me, which I tried to avoid, but ended up getting into a few fights after trying hard to avoid it. A person can only take so much, until she has to defend herself. SO, it’s not like i’m a fighter, trouble starter. Very opposite! lol

I have an offer from a company in Scotland. I’ve been living here (UK) for the past 2 yrs. They did some credit checks in UK and its clear. They are now doing credit/background checks in India. Can they have access to my credit history in India? or will it just be background/past employment check?
I have a mortgage running in India since 2007 (I never missed a payment)…also I took auto loans for 2 cars. Both loans paid off in 2010 (Never missed a payment on both of these)..however I have had a small amount (0) outstanding on a credit card. It is originally 20$, about some insurance the bank guys put on my card without my consent. I refused to pay for it since I never authorised it and I dont need it. but the bank refused to budge…so they kept adding charges…. Will this cost me my job here in Scotland?

I’ve recently been selected to interview with blue cross blue shield of IL. They went over my resume with me over the phone, I passed the test and did well, now I’m getting interviewed tomorrow. My questions are as follows:

1. will they do a background check after the interview or do you think they’ve already done it?

2. does the background check consist of past employment or just criminal?

3. if i were terminated from a previous job..like 3 jobs ago, will they find out why?

I’m not looking for a criminal record from the police. He said he was a police officer. I should be able to verify this. I’m not creepy for wanting to protect my daughter. They both live with me. My ex-wife was trying to put me a D.V so she could get a green card sponsership with her green card without my sponsership. Fortunately, the case was not accepted by the criminal court. Instead, family court sent me to the batterer intervetion program. I am thinking to move on my current job to different company. I am wondering if the family court case will affect or hold back my chance to get hired to other company on the background check? Will the case show on my background check? If so, what would the case show on my background check?

Additional information on my case. I was never been arrested. She just went to court to file D.V against me and tried to get restraining order against me. There was no fiscal evidence nor witness. How could judge convict me as "guilty?" I am not on probation. All I got is 3 years restraining order and 52 weeks batter intervetion program. many thanks for the input.

Ok here we go:
About 2 years ago, I worked at Target and stupidly stole some calculators which came out to 0. It was a one time mistake and I was caught by the Loss Prevention Manager. Usually they would call the police on this but he has been watching me for 3 weeks before confronting me and I did not steal after that. He just made me sign a guilty admission and to pay back the amount within 6 months. I agreed to it and was terminated. I paid the fee but a year late.
Now the question is, since no police was involve and I was not taken to jail, would this show up in my job employment history? I have other jobs afterwards but none ask for a background check. Just recently I got a great paying job but they will do a background check. Please advise, thank you

will be attending the Police Acedemy in January 2009. I am putting myself through and I will be fully emersing myself in this program. This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time and now I have the opportunity. I am a little worried my employment background. It isn’t a horriable thing, but I was separated from the USPS for calling in sick and I have the paperwork to prove that. I was written up at a previous job for calling a customer the ‘B" word, for which I apologized for, my manager stated that It was let go, but then she turned around a few months later and gave me a verbal that they write down. It is something that is cleared from my record after six months, that was well over a year now. Do I still ist it. Should I worry? I have never been arrested, I have an AA degree, been going to college and my employer before that loved me. I have a ton of references and have lived at the same place for years. I am a good person, I am concerned because I want this so much.

I just came back from an interview at Weis Markets to work as a Pharmacy Tech – the pharmacist who interveiwed me really liked me (said so), and said that she was very intersted in hiring me pending my background check.
I don’t have any criminal records or driving records, and didn’t list any false infomation on my application…but, I’ve heard that employers sometimes do credit reports.
I had to be taken to the Emergency Room a few months ago, and the total bill was close to 900 dollars (I don’t have insurance, nor do I currently have a job, and the hospital wasn’t willing to work out a payment plan – they immediately sent it to the credit agency after 60 days). It has yet to be paid because I don’t have the money, but I have recieved letters saying that my debt to the hospital could effect my credit score.
Do you think that I might not get this job because of this? It’s not as though it’s thousands of dollars.
Now I’m nervous…I really want this job…

I was offered a job and as long as I pass the background check I am hired. The job is an entry level industrial labor position. The concern I have is back in March I was arrested. My wife and I had a shoving match and I got Domestic Violence and also was tagged with a Protection Order violation making a phone call to her the day I was served papers. I know, I know I was in the wrong and I admitted it and paid for it. They were both misdemeanors. So will those keep me for passing the background check?

Also my wife and I did counseling and now have the best marriage a couple can have! This all changed me for the better.

Hello my boyfriend had to go for a Customs check at Logan airport….. He was hired for a job at the airport…. He passed his background check with his employer, but at Customs they will not except his Birth Certificate because he was born on an air force base not in the US….. What can he do?? They said to bring his passport, but that is from the 80′s…. Can they deny you the job he is a US Citizen since the day he was born just born on an air force base?? Thank you

Im seventeen now but over the summer I worked for a company for only two months and I got fired and when filling out applications my parents pretty much told me not to include that I ever had a job since more than likely I would never get hired if I had gotten fired before. He said after I turn eighteen they will be doing a background check on me. Do you think they will see that Ive worked some where before? Multiple people have said they wouldnt because when they do a background check after youve turned eighteen your slate is pretty much clean.

I have 4 driving tickets on my record, one for not stopping completely before turning on a red light, one for merging out of a right-turn-only lane, one for driving HOV, and one for running a red light.

I also fudged alittle on my resume, for a position I put "Intern" instead of "Summer Associate."

For my references, I put a co-worker down, but I never really worked directly with him, we worked in different departments.

Will this make me fail my pre-employment background check?

They’re not checking my credit history. They’re checking my education, employment (past 7 years), driving records, and criminal records.
The job is an Accounting position.
The company gave me a sheet of paper that had a bunch of items of a background screening and specifically checked what they were going to check. Credit history was not checked off. But it doesn’t matter anyway, i have a good credit history.

I told me co-worker about it, and he knows what to say as my reference.

i have one charge off on my credit report apt from that its ok got a job and they will run my credit how bad does a person credit have to be in order not to be hired i told them my credits not perfect i dont have mortgage default or anthing like that so umm.

because for some odd reason some people quit their job within 6 mths or day or two for no reason and they don’t list them on application, thinking that employer will call them back n get a bad reference.

I was 17years old and with my friends and we shopliftied . We were in another state from which we live. I went to court and had to pay a fine. I just had a interview with this company and I know they are going to do a back ground check. I live in a different state from were i shoplifted. I did a background check for my state and nothing came up but when I went to the state where I was arrested It came up as a misdeanor. Do you think they will check just my state or all over?

I was offered a job contigent upon passing a background check that includes, education,criminal, salary etc. Can they pull you transcripts from highschool and college or do they just check for dates and things like that?

I know its the holidays, so I’m trying not to worry. But I went for my physical, drug test, background check on december 15th and today is january 6th! My drug test I passed and my physical was good. I am going to go through a background check including employment history and education…I have worked here in the U.S since i was 17 year 2006 then last year I moved to Mexico and worked there. I came back to the U.S and I applied for bank of america which there going to background check me..however, at mexico i left the job with out a notice because they wouldn’t let me leave for a family emergency and i just left and quit n well I was working in a call center for the U.S embassy..U.S didn’t hired me it was just a calling center to provide information about visas..do you think the Hiring department of Bank of america would call to mexico?

I applied for a job as a recreational aid at a senior citizen home and on my application they asked " In the past seven year have you ever been convicted of a felony." I checked no. I do have a Misdamenor for possesion under 20 grams and my desposition was community service. I have always been told if your honest on application your past will not be used against you. ( ANd I was ) But they did not ask me if I had any misdamenors, so I when my background check comes back I am sure they will see it b/c it is in public records, but they can’t hold it against be for not saying anything when technically they did not ask right ?

Previously I posted information on all these companies now that want to check your credit, and do background checks before they hire you. The question is this:

Aren’t you contributing to lawlessness by doing this? Suppose there is someone out there that has some unfavorable information on their record because LIFE HAPPENS TO US ALL, and you decide to not hire them because say they had a criminal record. Aren’t you adding to the criminal activity by not giving them jobs when they need jobs to rehabilitate themselves?

People are going to do what they have to do to survive. How are people supposed to rehabilitate their lives if no one will give them a chance? Also, for the Human Resources Supervisors, most of them don’t know how to make a decision, much less make a determination on whether or not someone is bad or good based on say a credit report or an arrest record. They just look at it and go oh this person filed bankruptcy, or this person has an arrest record, so they can’t have a job.

I think you are over looking some good hard workers that may want to reform their lives by making these kind of STUPID DECISIONS. Also, and I have seen this one, sometimes you hire people that have no blemishes on their records and they come into your companies and steal, miss time from work that costs the company money, lie and all sorts of other ails.

I have been going back and forth with the HR director and she has told me that they are really close in making a decision. I recently applied to a job that requires a background check. I have no criminal convictions and good credit but on the application it asked for my former employment background. I went back to my three previously ranked jobs which have been the past 15years. In between that time from 1996 I was employed by a company for 3 months but didn’t mention them on the application. Anyway, the manager e-mailed me and asked me what the dates of my past employment were. I didn’t add that to my resume because the longest job I’ve held was for about 1 1/2 years!

I have tons of experience; I know I’m really qualified, as I’ve done similar roles in my past. I really WANT this job! How should I reply?

I recently have been technically hired on at a call center. I’ve filled the documents out and have gone through the drug screening. Only thing left to "pass" is the background check. I have nothing illegal in my background or anything like that, it’s just for previous employment I put down a job I had during college at a kiosk in the mall. It was during a couple holiday months and the owner was desperate for a worker so he hired me right away and paid in cash, just a little less than minimum wage. So I never had any W-2s or pay stubs. I never knew I was supposed to claim that as self-employment on tax returns, but that’s what the internet is telling me.

I was arrested for theft. My lawyer got my offense knocked down to a Misdemeanor C for Disorderly Conduct.

My question is — If I’m going for a job, I of course have to put down I have a misdemeanor c for disorderly conduct, but do I need to state it was for theft or does the disorderly conduct take care of that?

Just went on an interview for a secretarial position at a local hospital. They will be running a criminal background check. Fifteen years ago I was arrested for shoplifting, assault (as when the secret shopper grabbed my arm I tried to peel her hand off of me, and was charged with assault), possession of marijuana… very little amount. I turned my life around around after these arrests, went on to have three children, and I am a respectful citizen.

I really want this job!!! I am very nervous that this will show up and prohibit an offer of employment.

Yes, they are convictions.. they are misdemeanors. About nine years ago I applied for a job at a nursing home in Pennsylvania and this showed up. The person who interviewed me called me and wanted to meet with me to discuss this. I had already accepted another job and did not meet with her. I am not sure if she was going to offer me the job, even with seeing these convictions or not. At that point in time, it was only 6 years after the convictions. At the present time, these convictions are from 15 years ago, so I am hoping that they will not show up. All I can do at this point is hope I guess!

I was arrested 5 years ago with an aggravated assault charge. I pled not guilty ( I was really NOT guilty) and the judge gave me a letter of release from the charges and I was not convicted, and the case was closed. I just had a pre-employment background check done from a college I want to work at, and everything is ok except this arrest record is showing up. They have given my info to corporate to investigate further. First I want to know why it is on my record when I was not convicted and released from the charges?? Here’s the situation: I recently started working as a caretaker at a home for people with developmental/physical disabilities. A year ago, I was committed to a mental institution for a week because a psychiatrist mistook my self-injury for suicidal tendencies. I have scars all over my arms from the intense depression and anxiety I went through, and am going through (to a lesser degree) now.

My question is: Could this affect my job? They will run a background check, and I know the stay at the institution will show up. My employer may or may not ask me about it. I really don’t know anything about how businesses handle these things. And, because I spend a lot of my time bathing/changing the clients at this home, I have to roll up my sleeves at some point; and one of my coworkers is bound to see it eventually.

I made it through 3 nerve wracking interviews and passed the drug test, and was told that they were just waiting to get a bunch of people together before they assign me to an orientation. The first time I applied for a position with this company I had failed a pre-employment drug screening. I have since been sober and have applied for another position with this company. I just got hired at a large bank, and they conduct pre-employment background checks. No, I’m not a criminal. But, it looks like they verify dates of past employment with other companies. Problem being, I might have been off by a month or so with the time-frames for working at these past employers. Am I going to be out of luck and without a job because The times are off by like a month (Literally its like no more than a 1 month difference)? Well my daughters father has a criminal record. He has been without any problems for sometime now. Plus finding out he had a daughter also is keeping him on the right track. Well I guess he can’t hold a job or can’t find one. But I know he can.
Everytime I talk with him he always says he can’t get a job because of his record. But equal opportunity employment is what everyone holds as a written standard. I know a place I interviewed at did a consumer background check on me, but I assume they just look at credit history. Though I thought it was funny at the interview, one of the interviews said, "Have you ever worked retail? I worked at Penney’s once picking clothes off the floor."

I quit a job at Penney’s a year ago after only a few weeks. I don’t know how they could know, but it was strange she brought that up. How extensive are these background checks?

I was offered a job subject to a background check for a financial service/bank. Unfortunately I was deemed unbondable. In 2002 I went on pretrial diversion for a misdameanor. When filling out the application I answered that I was never charged with a crime and that was why I cannot get the job. Its been 7 years since than and after one year of probation, the charges are dropped and expunged from my record in Indiana. How did the background check come up with this and what can I do?

I was hired for a job pending a background check, I did not get it due to a sealed court case of my past popped up. I contacted my lawyer which then contacted the court. Court claimed they accidentally released because they just switched to an electronic system. Do I have a right to sue anyone for costing me this job?

I went to interview for a company twice and they recently called me to tell me that I got the job and told me that HR will be sending me a offer letter. But, they told me that they will be conducting a background check which I have to pay for? Is this okay?

My credit has already been given the okay and I’ve never had any incidents with the law so I’m clear on criminal. But I have smoked weed with in the last 7 years and the last time I did was about a year and a half ago. They asked on the application how many times and I put under 30. (hell I’m 26 years old… beside the older I got the less the it happened and now I don’t even do it… Clinton did it!!!) anyway…

So while I’m waiting I’m going crazy hoping that my application isn’t rejected because of this. I didn’t want to lie about it on the application since I may have to go through this process again and for a more extensive type of clearance.

Does anyone know if there is some sort of guideline followed when doing a background checks as extensive as this?

What is said about one who has smoked weed before?

Is this a deal breaker?

Should I even be worried?

FYI some secret security clearances involve lie detector tests… which is the only reason I admitted to ever having smoked weed… It’s not the piss test I’m worried about… it’s my credibility…

I raised two kids on my own,never ever received one dime of child support from there mother.Since I filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy,every time I have to have a background check I fail it.Why does credit issues weigh so heavy when it come to acquiring a job? I guess you can commit a felony now but as long as you have good credit everything is alright.

i have a small record. i have a job lined up at a local fast food restaurant. the manager says she’ll overlook my record once i get off probation. this is taking longer than expected. i won’t get off for another two weeks. but i told her that i would be off this week. so my question is…if she runs a background check..yes she will see my offense of course…but will she be able to tell if i’m still on probation or not?

My husband was offered a job for .70 for a company as a slitter operator and he has to pass a drug and background check.

He will pass the drug test but he’s worried about the background check. He’s 33 years old, and when he was 18/19 years old, he had a few felonies. Will they show it in his background check?

I worked at a business for aproximately 2 months and left for various reasons. Do to the fact that I worked there for such a short time I have chosen not to list that particular job on my resume (which I know is fine to do) but to not list it on an application is omission. Even though that particular job is not listed doesn’t mean they can’t find out. My main two part question is can a future employer find out AND if so how? I am interested in knowing methods OTHER THEN checking my credit report.

When I was 19 I through a party when my parents were out of town. Everything was going great. Then I hear this banging noise and a girl crying. I pleaded innocent, but my Attorney told me to plead down to a lesser charge of Summary harrassment. Initial charge was aggrevated assault. He said she could get on the stand and start crying and that could be bad for everyone. So the man who beat her got 90 days in jail and I pleaded guilty to Summary harrassment. Can this interfere with future job employment?

I was suspended from my job recently due to an arrest in Feb of this year. Technically I still have a job, and once the charges are cleared up I can go back to work. The problem is, the charges will not be dismissed until after I do community service. I am seeking another job. I am landing interviews, but no call backs. I am hiring a nanny for my kids and need a background check. I have tried netdetective.com, recommended by Consumer Reports or something, and it is a total scam. They have deducted the fee from my account 3 times now without setting up a user account for me.

ki6criew: Thanks for the sentiment. I stayed home with my kids for 3 years when my divorce forced me to go back to work. Being a stay at home mom was the hardest job I ever had. I love my kids, and I love my career, albeit in a much different way. I have given very serious thought to staying home with them again, but I would be giving up a lot of things, namely health insurance, that we just can’t live without. So keep in mind that everyone’s situation is unique and it doesn’t mean that us working moms are in any way selfish, or love our kids any less. I commend the women who stay home and raise their children exclusively, however I bet they are married to someone whose income can support the whole family.

why are employer’s or Headhunters running from application forms that detail a felony charge on application form, i’m given reasons why the job is no longer available,
even after i’ve been given a start date of hire.

i got rejected for a job that i was sure i would get and the interviewer even said that unless there was some huge problem that i should get the job. I havent heard anything back and i was supposed to hear back like 2 weeks ago. i figured there must be like an outstanding warrant for my arrest and freaked out. i called my local police department and they said they could check my records (contrary to belief i guess u can check over the phone, my police dept even has a warrant division) the nice woman checked several databases and said she couldnt see any warrant in or outside of the state of california. i told her there was a problem with my background check and she said she didnt know what it could be. could the check have seen more than the police could? like some secret warrant?

When a job’s ad say’s "the ability to pass a criminal background check " does that mean they will NOT hire you if you have a felony on your record ,no if’s and’s or but’s about it ?

I had a drug related felony (PCS) about 5 years ago , I did drug classes and the judge dismissed the case. I guess I was convicted then the class was my "sentence" .

That is the only thing that would be on my record.

As a condition of my employment, I have to submit to a criminal background check. I’m not opposed to that at all.

However, the HR person told me that I would have to pay for it, to which I replied "That’s a business cost of Huntington Learning Center – It is not my responsibility".

What’s the law on this? Any thoughts?

I don’t have anything to hide, but I didn’t list one of the jobs I had in high school because the experience I gained there didn’t pertain to the job I was applying for and there were only 4 spaces to list previous work experience so I chose to write down the places that were more like the job I was applying for. I just don’t want the potential new employer to think that I’m hiding something because I didn’t list it… if I had that job when I was 17 (started the job and quit the job when I was 17) will it come up on a background check? I’m 20 years old now, so it’s within 7 years…

Background checks also show previous employment history. Depending on what type of background check is being conducted. I got the impression from the paperwork I filled out that it’d be check both criminal history and my employment history.

In NY the law on hiring people with criminal record is the employer can not deny you unless the record is something that is directly related to the job. Like a bank robber can not work at a bank. Do most employers in NY honor the law.

i got a job at walgreens and their doing a background check

About 5 years ago I got into a little trouble due to someone giving me a fake check, the conviction was expunged long story short. Last year I was offered a job with Wells Fargo bank & then they withdrew their offer after my background check didn’t pan through… How were they able to view this expunged record & what exact employer type has access to these "destroyed" records?
FYI, I was never arrested & also, I was specifically told that I would not have to check "yes" on an application to conviction. I’ve also already held federal & state positions without problem.

I work for a large hospital in Wisconsin and they recently decided they were going to send out a criminal background check survey to ALL hospital staff. They are claiming they are choosing to apply the four or five year background check required by the Caregiver law to ALL hospital staff. I work in IT and NEVER have patient contact. This seems fishy to me besides just being insulting. I was honest on my application and nothing has change in my criminal histroy (or complete lack there of) since my hiring almost four years ago. They also said if we did not fill out this form and return it we would be fired. Beyond applying the caregiver law to non-caregivers I thought it was illegal to force someone to fill something out / sign something under duress of their job? I know this doesn’t replace consulting a lawyer but looking for some guidance on where I stand and what my options are. Thanks to anyone with legal expertiese that can help.

I applied for a job. I went in for the orientation, they then informed me that (somehow) I didn’t pass the background check.

This is hard to believe for me. I’ve talked to a few law students today and they told me that there’s really no way I could’ve failed a background check.

I’m 20 years old. I’ve worked 5 different jobs, laid off twice, voluntarily quit the other times or the job season expired. I’ve been in the military before (only reserve). I’ve never been in trouble with the law before in my life and my credit is above average. How the frick did I fail a background check?

Essentially I’m not out, and I’m on the IRR. But basically I’m a non-active military member right now.
I have no debt, and have never missed a credit card payment. Nothing like parkings tickets or anything like that. Right now, I’m very clean.

I was recently let go from a job that I was only an employed with for a little over a month. The manager loves to fire people (she fired 5 people in the time I was there!) I know for a fact that if contacted, she would absolutely not give me a good recommendation. My question is, do I list the job under my employment history? I am also concerned about lying on my application as well. I feel like either way I’m screwed! Has anyone else been in this situation or have any ideas?

A little more info: I was let go because I refused to sign a write up, which every employee who worked that day received. She then accused me of arguing with her.
Edit: The write up was for all the registers being under or over at the end of the day. The district manager instructed our manager to make sure none of us messed up on the registers again, so our punishment was a write up.

So 2 weeks ago I was offered this great job with this great company, but I can’t start until the background check clears. Well, I lied on my application about this one job I had several years ago…it was an insurance sales position, which I claimed to work at for a year, when I really only did it for a month or so. My would-be manager called me today and said they are having a problem verifying that I worked for that insurance company, and asked if I knew the company’s address…I figured if I get caught, oh well….so I gave it to her. That job was 100% commissioned, so I was an independent sales rep….so I wasn’t on any payroll or anything, and I had to fill out a 1099 rather than a W-2. Is there ANY possibility at all that maybe they will verify that I did work there, but since they won’t be able to tell for how long, that they will still give me the job??

Are they checking to see if you are some sort of pedophile or sicko or are they looking into your driving record, i.e. dui’s, reckless driving, etc. and how far back are they going to check? Is this really necessary and legal? Some places want to do background checks, credit checks, drug testing, etc. for jobs that only pay about hour. Anyone know?

I really want this job and don’t want my past credit to hurt me. I have past 2 other background checks in the last 4 yrs. My concern is being bonded. Do employers look at the entire picture or can just one thing affect the job. They have already offered me the position so now it’s up to the background check. Nothing on my credit report shows my strong work ethic or morals. I’m really worried.

They told me it WOULDNT be picked up by employers who perform background checks, but i just applied for a job and something came up. they havent told me yet but it has me worried. I really want this job and don’t want my past credit to hurt me. I have past 2 other background checks in the last 4 yrs. My concern is being bonded. Do employers look at the entire picture or can just one thing affect the job. They have already offered me the position so now it’s up to the background check. Nothing on my credit report shows my strong work ethic or morals. I’m really worried.

Instead, what if i use a site that uses a phony school, but the site validates my credentials from the phony school backing up my claim of my degree ownership when employers call? Basically, I want to find out how long it takes for your background check to come up clean when something is dismissed. CA HR specialist only please! Trying to get a job and they said one of the requirement is to obtain a background clearance per state regulation. They are asking me to pay for the background check fee which is 82.00. Can they ask me to pay for it? I have no money how can I obtain a job, would it be a discrimination? I have a felony (nothing serious) six years ago and am trying to get a job.

Unfortunately stupid choices in my teen years resulted in felony convictions for bad checks. This is not a representation of my current moral character and I have successfully held employment in both the financial and information technology areas since the conviction. I also have executive level management experience.

None the less, I find that in the current job market, the conviction seems to be more of an issue than previously. Any suggestions on companies that value the employee over the background check? I am willing to relocate nationally, and am willing to accept a lower starting salary to get my foot in the door. Any suggestions are appreciated.

i’m just wondering. everytime i fill out an application to do work for the federal government, even state depending on the job, i have to pass a background check. and they’re pretty thorough, so a job as important as being president should do the same. right?

I went on an interview recently and I signed the disclosures to do background check however no where on those forms did it say to include my DOB. They have my name and S.S#. Isn’t that more than enough? I got a call today from my potential new employer that they need my DOB to do my background check however I did not get the call from the actual third party company they hire to do the background checks requesting this information.

So to summarize should I give it to them or are they just trying to find out how old I am to base it on whether they will give me the job.

I am currently employed in Company A and are interviewing with Company B which will probably give me an offer. Part of the application process is a background check done by Company B (a third party working for them) that will do employment verification.

In the application for background check, they asked if they may contact my current employer and I answered "NO" as I don’t want my current employer to figure out I am applying for another job.

Since I requested that my current employer should not be contacted – Then how are they going to do the employment verification? Because I am sure they still have to verify that Company A employs me!

I was "charged" with criminal harassment in Jan 2010, with and ordered to pay a total of 0 by Jan 2011. My first probation was Feb, 2nd is in April. I’m currently unemployed and trying to find a job, how will this show up on an employee background check?

This happened in Mass., and I went to a probable cause hearing then to an arraignment, both with an attorney.

I was never formally arrested or fingerprinted. A summons was sent to me via USPS for an show cause appearance where there was enough evidence to go forward with an arraignment. At the arraignment my attorney spoke to the prosecutor before the arraignment.

My probation officer said that it will show up as a misdemeanor for criminal harassment, and to just say that it was an dispute with a neighbor, it was a lack of communication and it’s been resolved. The truth of the matter is that I was sending mailings and subscription to a person that my husband should not have been friends with.(to make a long story short without getting into any depth or detail)

I didn’t have to plead anything. There was enough evidence against me. I just had to stand in front of the judge with my attorney and listen to him.

I have been offered a job for BoA teller position and I am currently getting a background check done. On my record is a null processed charge for a threat I did not do (over the phone), happened over a year ago. Also, I was charged with driving on a suspended license because the dmv sent me a letter and I didn’t receive it to do what they requested. Three weeks ago I was asked to come in for testing for a job I applied to on line w/ a local major employer. I took the test and was the first to finish. The next day I was called and asked to do a phone interview. After the phone interview I was asked to come in the next day for a face to face interview. I interviewed with two recruiters/supvers and was told the interview should only take 45min and instead was there for an hour fifteen minutes. At the end of the interview I was given background check forms to fill out and when one of the interviewers left, the other interviewer informed me that I did very well and that I should hear back in 2wks once the bkground ck is completed. Today is 2 days before week 3. I called last week and was told that the bkground cks are still being done. Several ppl applied for the position, so I don’t know if that has anything to do w/ the delay. I am concerned b/c I do hv bad credit. I would think I would hv rec a denial letter by now though if I was no longer being considered for the position. I really want this job and just really want to know how long a bkground ck should tk and if credit is enough to disqualify a potential candidate?

They brought me in today to do paperwork and want me to start monday, but I guess it’s all contingent upon me passing the background check and drug test. I told the hiring manager that I did not have the best credit, and he did not seem concerned, he just said that HR handles all of that. The guy I shadowed in the hiring process said he had bad credit too and he had no problems, but I just didn’t know with the bankruptcy. Any help would be appreciated and spam is not.

I already did my internet research and most of you are totally wrong.

background checks will only find it in SOME states unless there is a criminal record attached to it. (example; domestic abuse, spousal abuse)
And even if found, it is not a disqualifying record for a job because it is not a crime and anyone can order a restraining order against anybody else.

Or, is it mainly just a criminal history background check? My credit is far from perfect, and I’m nervous I won’t get the job because of it (even though it’s already been offered to me contingent on the background check).

I am going through the background check portion of the hiring phase for a Sheriff’s Dept to be a dispatcher. I was completely honest on the packet I had to fill out but now I’m remembering things that I frogot to put on it, such as, a job I had when I was 15 yrs old and some seasonal jobs that I worked part time 6 years ago during the holidays. I took a sleeping pill that wasn’t prescibed to me during spring break in 2004 (i didn’t think about it because I didn’t think it was considered drug use but now that I think about it, it was!) I also forgot that I smoked weed once during my freshman year (i was honest about the other 3 times I smoked weed. I honestly forgot about that time while I was filling out my paperwork). I’m not sure if I will have to do a lie detector test but if I do i want to be completely honest with them about everything!!! Either way I want to get these issues cleared up. Any advice on how I go about letting them know that I forgot some things?!?!?

Hi – I was laid off from my job almost a year ago. It’s very tough out there and I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs. I went through my savings, assets, etc and coming down to the wire. Even with a college degree, the only place that offered me a position is at Blockbuster as store manager. I don’t care where, I just need a job ASAP. I was offered the position pending the background check. She said it would take about three days. It’s been five days now and I still haven’t heard anything.

So my questions is, what type of background check does BBV do? I have a clean criminal history. My credit is pretty shaky due to the lack of funds the past year. My former employee is a little peeved at me for claiming and winning an unemployment claim. I have a small problem. I had just earned my Associates degree in liberal studies since I want to be an elementary school teacher. I applied for a job at the ymca and I went to the interview and completed child abuse training, and they offered the job to me, without doing a background check. My small problem is that about a year ago, I worked for a retail store and I had to pay restitution back for an incident. The incident was that I took a check from a customer for payment for purchases- without it being signed. The store went bankrupt and I had to pay the amount back from my own pocket. They said since the shortage was in my employee ID number that it was considered theft. They placed my name in a retail theft database (apisenterprise.com). And now I’m afraid that since the ymca never ran a background check on me before they offered me the position that I might not get the job. I have a clean record other than this minor incident. On the application it asked if I was convicted of a crime and I marked no because, I haven’t. I never spoke to a police officer, or went to court. Could they hold this against me? I ask because I know that if a potential employer calls a former employer you were fired from, it is unlawful for that employer to give out that kind of information. Apparently, they’re not even allowed to give out the salary you made.

But, what I don’t know is if the company you were fired from releases the information–the fact that you were fired–to background check companies … or puts it in some sort of database that any background check company can access.

I’m not asking if they call my past employer. I’m asking if it will show up on a background employment check. Ya know, those companies that do nothing but background checks on individuals for other companies for hiring purposes…
I’m also not asking if they check. I KNOW they check cuz an AT&T employee emailed me telling me which kinds of background checks they do: (county, federal, etc), a driving check, and an employment check. Those were his exact words.

I emailed him explaining that I was working with a credit agency which would show why I am delinquent on some of my credit cards. And he wrote back thanking me, telling me he didn’t think they did a credit check, but that they did the above ones.

I have been working at my current job for close to two months and they just informed me that their is an employment discrepancy on my background check and I would need to submit more info for them to complete the background check.

When I applied for this job I was asked to complete a background check with employment verification. While doing the employment verification I didn’t know the exact dates for previous jobs so I took a wild guess. Now two months later the company is asking me to submit a W-2 or paystub to show that I worked the dates that I stated. They contacted the company and it shows that I worked for that company but the dates that I submitted were off by a few months of the actual date.

I recently interviewed for a position in NC in which I had to consent to a background check. About 15 years ago I was charged with a felony but went to court and had it reduced to a misdemeanor. On the application it only asked if I had been convicted of a felony so I checked no. They only asked me for my addresses for the past seven years so I am wondering if that is as far back as they will check my record or not? Early April, I got offered a job at a security firm in California and signed an employment contract, HR manager told me that my background check for a guard card could take anywhere from 2 days to 6 months.

I have a spotless employment record and absolutely no criminal record yet this report will deem me as untrustworthy. I have 2 year old medical bills and student loans that aren’t going anywhere. Without a job my credit will get worse. My question is how much would this affect their decision. Has anyone familiar with their hiring process. Any insight would be appreciated.

I had to submit my fingerprint for a background check for a job. The check came back with a background that was not mine. The person has the same birthdate and used my name as one of her aliases. She has a different S.S. number and different body build. I just dont understand how her background can be connected to my fingerprints. She also has a criminal record and I do not. The really strange thing is they don’t even do credit checks for those that buy cell phones. they don’t even do contracts for there customers its cash or nothing.

7. They want a copy of my last pay stub.. LOL.. Couldn’t tell ya how to get one of those… I will NOT contact my previous employer that I worked for.

What should I do?

I had an interview to a bank and they said the background check may take about a week. I have worked at various places and some are very irrelevant to my resume, so I left them out. In place of that, I added a few months to one of my employment places and I’m wondering if once they run the background check, they will see me as a liar? Okay so I got a job as a Courtesy Associate in Southern California last wednesday pending a drug screen and background check. Well I got the drug screen done the same day, and I have heard background checks take a few days, sometimes slightly longer. I am starting to worry because I haven’t heard yet. I just called the store and they said they are still waiting for the results. Anybody have advice or tips?

In the past I had two misdemeanors in Missouri expunged along with the arrest record. If I apply for a job with the Illinois State Police will they still be able to access these records for their background check?

I was offered a job from Blue Cross Blue Shield on Monday (Jan. 26). I was informed I had to take a drug test and they would do a background/criminal check. I was curious how long this should take and was wondering why they would offer me a job before doing the background check and drug screen.

I just took phase II of the assessment test and they told me that they have to do a background check before I can move on to the next phase. One more thing, does disturbing the peace charges lessen the chances of getting the job as a screener.

For all the counties I’ve seen they give you the same exact background search as cops, but I’m just wondering if they’re as strict with certain things ( felony convictions obviously) as the police would be. Obviously there a few things that would carry over, but say you’d tried harder drugs or something like that, would that disqualify you as much from a probation type job as it would from a law enforcement postion?

I interviewed for a job the other day and was told I would have to pass the 5th phase of a background check. Any idea what this is and what other phases there are?

My husband just had a background check done for a job, and it came back falsified. All of the information he provided was correct. Birth certificate, social security card, name, work history, education history, etc. He does not have any felonies or any criminal history at all. What could have happened to make it come back falsified? We are really upset about it, because he is not going to get this job for unknown reasons.

I know a guy who was in an accident in Oklahoma and ended up getting arrested. During the investigation they found an adult video in a broken VCR in his truck, this is now causing his background check to say that he was being investigated for violating child porn laws in the state? He was never charged with anything related to that and would never be involved with anything involving children. This is affecting him being able to get a job at a retail electronic store. Does anyone know how long an international background check takes? I was offered the job 2 weeks back and 1 week ago they told me they needed my actual signature on the background check form. YOu see if I loose my job, I loose the only way I take of my kids.

Look, I assume that everyone who answers will think I am guilty of something, which I am not. It seems as though I was involved in something, I had no idea I was. My attorney think the authorities want information from me, which I will be happy to provide. So please don’t judge me. My questions was simple. I don’t think the smart and nasty comments are really helpful at all.

What I wanted to know, are arrest disclosed to potential employers?

I called and background search company and they said it was illegal to disclose to an employer. Because you are not guilty of anything. But I wanted to make sure. Again, I have never committed a crime in my life and will never, I would never jeopordize my kids, they are way to important to me. So if you would answer that, it would most help me.

I was convicted of driving with an invalid license, a misdemeanor, in 2008. Will this cause me to fail a pre-employment background check? The company (a law firm), seems strict. What are my chances that my misdemeanor will disqualify me from getting this job as a receptionist??? I need help, I’m really worried! Thanks!

The application asked if I have ever been convicted of a crime, "felony or misdemeanor". Then it states that havin a conviction doesn’t necessarily disqualify me from getting the job. It doesn’t state anything more about it.

I applied for a job a while ago and a few days ago I got a reply saying I am being considered for position and they are asking me to mail certain documents, such as criminal background documents, references, copy of passport, etc.

However, it doesn’t say anything about a deadline for submitting these documents. It’s important for me to find out as getting some of these documents, such as the criminal background document, takes approximately two weeks to receive from the national authorities.

Does it sound like I’m not really interested in the job if I write and ask when the deadline is for submitting the requested documents?

An actual background check takes 3-5 days, correct? Well, do they check credit?
I may have a job at a hospital, it does not deal with money whatsoever. I don’t have the greatest credit because I’ve worked at a low paying job for a while and I am trying to get a better job..I’m responsible with paying some of my bills just I fell behind on some credit cards..

I have been offered a wonderful well-paying position, pending the background check. I have no skeletons in my closet, outside of some financial credit issues. The job I am getting does not involve finances of any kind. Does anyone know anything about background checks and could this prevent me from getting the job?

I work in the financial services in the UK, and am looking to get another role within the industry, but with a different company.

Unfortunately, I also have an unspent criminal conviction for a driving offence I committed approximately 3.5 years ago.

My current company know about the conviction, as I was working for them when it all happened. They have not had a problem with it as it is not relevant to my work; however, I am now at the second interview stage for a new role elsewhere, and am worried about disclosure.

They have not asked me whether I have any unspent convictions, so i have not disclosed it. But i need to know about my rights if I get the role:

1) Can the company perform a CRB Background check without my permission?

2) If my conviction comes to light, can they dismiss me because of it, if they never asked me about it?

3) If they ask me to disclose after I accept the job, can they dismiss me if the conviction has no relevance to the role?

A few more things to add… As mentioned above, I’m in the UK, so I really need advice on what my rights are here. I also realise that if I lie about convictions they have the right to fire me for it, so this purely relates to if they never ask me to disclose.

It may be worth mentioning that no one was hurt in the driving offence (except me and the car), and my record both before and since have been spotless. I was given a community sentence (3yrs probation), with no jail time.

The role I’m applying for is also entirely office based, with no call for any driving whatsoever.

My friend got a failure to appear and has not yet rectified it because he is trying to get the money for a lawyer. He needed a job and it seems that every place he applied looked promising til the background check. Would that be because of the failure to appear?

Does the company call you? I was already offered the job prior to the background check, and they told me when I’d be starting. Then a few days later, I had to fill out information so they could complete a background check. That was two days ago. How will I know when the background check is complete?

i applied to a job as a security guard with allied barton in person. I talked to the people there and they said Monday they’d start reviewing the applications (Today). How long does it take to run a background check before they’d call to set up an interview if i were to get that far? or would they not do one until i was given an interview? In Missouri criminal records are posted online, and you can’t get a job hardly anywhere if you have a felony.

I know there are federal and state laws governing this issue. I’m wondering exactly what information is disclosed during a background check. I’m asking because I was a former police officer who got charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors (domestic incident) a month ago. The charges are false and are being fought with an attorney. Don’t wanna go into too many details, but all charges will be dropped in the end. The victim doesn’t want to testify, and never did. No victim, no case. Anyways, I know that if I applied to be another police officer or work for a Police Agency, they can run a special background check that will show the arrest, but if a private corporation say Walmart, or Target were to run my background for an employment check, only Felony Convictions would show up right? Or would the arrest show up as well? I know the application only says to list convictions, so im not listing anything. I just really want this job!! Pays very well with good benefits! Anyone?
