People Background Search

I recieved a letter from a prospective employer stating that there was "information in the report that would prevent them from offering me employment" and they enclosed a description of my rights under the fair credit reporting act. I just want to know how to get a copy of whatever it was they looked at so I know what is on there. I have been arrested before but charges were dropped and I have passed my background screening for all my other jobs

Hey community! I recently was accepted into the Lapd’s hiring process. The third step is to fill out information on your background so that they can see if what you provided them matches up with the background check they run on you. However I can’t remember some specific employment dates, and I was also fired at one of my previous jobs for slapping a friend on the butt, (my employer had said that I could indeed reference them and we left with no hard feelings, but insisted they had to fire me because they didn’t want that type of behavior to spread into the company. They said they would put down that I had quit but I want to make sure if they put I was fired that my storys stay straight.) so what are the best companys to hire for a background check on myself? and what comes up on a background check for me being fired for my job for what I did? Oh and any advice for those who are police officers on the process? I have a squeaky clean record with only 1 traffic ticket and no arrests, no drug and alcohol history.

I had been at a job for at least 7 years before being laid off, so I do have some job stability reflected but there are two jobs that I left after a day because it just wasn’t going to work out.

are there any states/cities in the U.S that does not do criminal background checks for employment?
Note: I am aware that all governmental employers do background check. i need to know are there any states/cities that dont do background checks for just regular jobs like (example) walmart,kmart ect…….. ??

hello everyone,

I’ve recently been selected to interview with blue cross blue shield of IL. They went over my resume with me over the phone, I passed the test and did well, now I’m getting interviewed tomorrow. My questions are as follows:

1. will they do a background check after the interview or do you think they’ve already done it?

2. does the background check consist of past employment or just criminal?

3. if i were terminated from a previous job..like 3 jobs ago, will they find out why?

It’s not horribly bad, just wondering. Thank you for any help or advice.

I want to become a police officer in a few years, but have a few questions about the background checks they conduct.

I’ve worked at a few jobs, some years ago, that I can’t remember specific dates to, would they come up in a employment background check? I don’t want to not mention them, but not knowing the correct dates could also look sketchy. If I were to pay for someone to run a background check on me, could I find out this sort of information?

And if so, can anyone recommend me an agency who could conduct a thorough background check?

It would be nice knowing this information before I even apply.

My record has been squeaky clean for the last 4, almost five years. I’m damn sick and tired of not being hired because I have a theft charge from 5 years ago. So, What is "LONG-ENOUGH?" How long before it wont show up anymore? Just a regular employment background check, for easy to get jobs.

About 2 years ago, I worked at Target and stupidly stole some calculators which came out to 0. It was a one time mistake and I was caught by the Loss Prevention Manager. Usually they would call the police on this but he has been watching me for 3 weeks before confronting me and I did not steal after that. He just made me sign a guilty admission and to pay back the amount within 6 months. I agreed to it and was terminated. I paid the fee but a year late.
Now the question is, since no police was involve and I was not taken to jail, would this show up in my job employment history? I have other jobs afterwards but none ask for a background check. Just recently I got a great paying job but they will do a background check. Please advise, thank you

hi i am filling out my information for a background check at bank of america, i got fired from 1 of my jobs, should i tell them that i’ve been terminated because i’m scared that it may jeopardize my employment with them and if i don’t tell them, will they find out because i heard a that a background check only list your dates of employments and not the reason why you no longer work there. I remember when i worked at a theater the managers were looking for people under 18 to hire so they didn’t have to do a background check and could hire them quicker.
I didn’t say anyone told me they required it, I was asking people on here because it wasn’t something covered in civics class.

I applied for a job with a warehouse company, everything seemed like it was going very well in the interview process. The next day I had found out that failed the background check and was ineligible for hire. I am 18, and have had 4 jobs in my employment history, and I had to fix an error in my traffic record. Im still concerned though about why I had failed my background check, and if anyone could provide me with a list of reasons why I could fail a background check.

I might have a job interview soon at Raley’s and they do a hair test for drugs. Thursday, I smoked half a joint. On Friday, I was tricked into eating hash popcorn and took one hit from a joint. I am very nervous that if I fail the drug test, it could hurt my chances on getting future jobs. Will a failed drug test appear in my background check or not?

I have a cousin who worked with a fake social security using his real name…now he has his own real social security number and will go under a background check including employment history for a job…Now that he has his own will any of the jobs he used to work for with the fake social would come up in the new social security number when he goes through the background check?
Would the invetigator doing the background check would find out if he list all his previous employments? What if he doesn’t list his previous jobs would the investagator find out anyways?

This company that offered me a job is currently doing a background check on me….I can’t start until it clears. Well, I lied about the length of employment on one of my past jobs, and it seems they are having trouble verifying this job….it was an insurance sales job I got after college; I worked there for about a month till I realized I wasn’t cut out for it….but I stated I was there for a year. My would-be manager called me the other day and asked if I had that insurance company’s address because they are having trouble verifying that I worked there.

So they say that it pays to be honest. Should I call her back and explain to her that the reason they are having trouble verifying that I worked there is because I lied about how long I worked there? And then explain the reason I lied was because I didn’t want there to be a huge gap in my employment history. Do you think they would forgive me and still give me the job for coming out and being honest with them?

Previously I posted information on all these companies now that want to check your credit, and do background checks before they hire you. The question is this:

Aren’t you contributing to lawlessness by doing this? Suppose there is someone out there that has some unfavorable information on their record because LIFE HAPPENS TO US ALL, and you decide to not hire them because say they had a criminal record. Aren’t you adding to the criminal activity by not giving them jobs when they need jobs to rehabilitate themselves?

People are going to do what they have to do to survive. How are people supposed to rehabilitate their lives if no one will give them a chance? Also, for the Human Resources Supervisors, most of them don’t know how to make a decision, much less make a determination on whether or not someone is bad or good based on say a credit report or an arrest record. They just look at it and go oh this person filed bankruptcy, or this person has an arrest record, so they can’t have a job.

I think you are over looking some good hard workers that may want to reform their lives by making these kind of STUPID DECISIONS. Also, and I have seen this one, sometimes you hire people that have no blemishes on their records and they come into your companies and steal, miss time from work that costs the company money, lie and all sorts of other ails.

I recently applied to a job that requires a background check. I have no criminal convictions and good credit but on the application it asked for my former employment background. I went back to my three previously ranked jobs which have been the past 15years. In between that time from 1996 I was employed by a company for 3 months but didn’t mention them on the application. It was a horrific and negative experience for me and I walked off the job. Should I have written this job on the application? It was so long ago but I didn’t want to explain to the company how negative it was for me. I was not sure how far a company goes back to look into my job history.

I work for a well known financial advising firm, they want to offer me a full time position and hire me on the team. I have to fill out all this information on my background/education/employment and several financial questions. I’m licensed in insurance, have my series 7 and 63 so I’m not worried about any of the financial or criminal background checks. However I had a couple of jobs that I just walked out on, and pretty muched burned my bridges. Just to make it clear I was not fired, but I know they contact all my employers to verify, pay, duration of employment, and rehire status. Should I leave those 2 jobs out, and will they know? From my understanding they are only going to look at what I put down, and for the gap in employment I would just put stay at home dad, since I do have a child. I really hate to lie, but putting that info will most likely cost me a job offer….It would be about a 6 month gap.

I just got fired for falling asleep on the job and I worked with special needs kids and was wondering if this would go on my background check and stop people from hiring me for jobs like it in the future.

I recently applied to volunteer at the local library, and they said that they send the background check off to the local police department. THAT is the one that I want to see. I feel like I have the right to see my own background check at least once.

My daughter recently saw her employee record and pre-employment background check. It listed her as HIGH RISK. She has a perfect credit history, college degree, excellent employment record and no criminal history. She phoned the background checking agency and asked why. They responded that she is HIGH RISK because she is my daughter and when I went through a life challenging health challenge and became disabled, I had to file for bankruptcy. Because my daughter was living at home at the time of my illness / bankruptcy, they say that makes her HIGH RISK. My health crises and bankruptcy should have NOTHING to do with my daughter’s life. Is this legal? If not, how do we fix this? Who knows how many jobs she has been denied because of the false HIGH RISK status!
She does not live with me. She has had two homes since this happened and nothing has changed this negative report. It simply cannot be legal for an agency to assign blame to one person for another person’s actions. If I committed murder, you wouldn’t also go to jail just because we lived together. If my current landlord files for bankruptcy, it has NOTHING to do with me. A child cannot be responsible in any way for their parents financial collapse due to a near death health challenge.

In my younger days I worked at a lot of jobs for a month here, three months there…basically doing a lot of seasonal stuff. None of them were relevant to my career so I leave them off my resume. My current employer is going to do a background check. Does every job show up?

i asked this question last night but didnt get the answer i wanted so here goes again. I have two driving charges vc.23103 and vc.23140 one being a infraction and one a misdemeanor. i recently had these charges expunged but according to the clerk at the court these charges still remain on the record but will say "dismissed". now what i’d like to know is am i suppose to mention this to employers or just answer "no" when it asks if i’ve ever been convicted of a crime.
the word thats usually used is "convicted" which means that i was found guilty. i was found guilty for both charges but since the charges were expunged and now say "dismissed" next to them would i still have to mention this on applications?

really confused at the moment. i dont want employers to think im lying, but i also dont want to mention anything if i don’t need to.

im sure there are millions of people out there who have had similiar charges in the past and have jobs now.

In march 2007 I was arrested on suspicion of DUI. In July 2007 my lawyer got the DUI dropped and pleaded to misdemeanor reckless driving. I just graduated from college and am looking for jobs and some companies ask on forms if you’ve been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony other than a minor traffic violation. Would this reckless driving be considered a minor traffic violation, and will it show up on my background check?

Is there any way for a potential employer/police agency to check previous jobs that I may have had? Not that I have bad records or anything, but I am just curious to see if there is such a way to find the information out? I mean lets face it do I really have to write all the petty jobs that I have had throughtout the years? Or is it if I don’t tell them it doesn’t exist?

What all is checked for in a Target background check? I was hired pending a background check, and i have several jobs i didn’t list on the application, will these come up?

My husband is applying for a job at a bank and in the application it says that they perform a background check through the FBI. When he was younger (16), he got in trouble in a different state and got a misdemeanor on his juvenile record, which is now presumably sealed. Is this going to show up on this background check? He has never had an issue with it before when applying for other jobs, but we figured the bank would do a more thorough check.

Do criminal background checks for employment usually pick up CHARGES as well as convictions? I was charged with a felony, but was convicted of a misdemeanor instead…I know jobs would see the misdemeanor, but would they also see the felony charge?

I was mistakenly arrested for a harassment charge but the case was no-complainted and it did not lead to any trial or conviction.

Will this show up in background checks for appartment lease and jobs?

I am hiring a nanny for my kids and need a background check. I have tried netdetective.com, recommended by Consumer Reports or something, and it is a total scam. They have deducted the fee from my account 3 times now without setting up a user account for me.
Several of my family members are police officers. They can actually lose their jobs if they run checks on people that are not being booked or investigated for something. I tried that route first!~
ki6criew: Thanks for the sentiment. I stayed home with my kids for 3 years when my divorce forced me to go back to work. Being a stay at home mom was the hardest job I ever had. I love my kids, and I love my career, albeit in a much different way. I have given very serious thought to staying home with them again, but I would be giving up a lot of things, namely health insurance, that we just can’t live without. So keep in mind that everyone’s situation is unique and it doesn’t mean that us working moms are in any way selfish, or love our kids any less. I commend the women who stay home and raise their children exclusively, however I bet they are married to someone whose income can support the whole family.

If a company is doing a background check, will all the jobs you work for show up?

I am currently applying for jobs and I was arrested last spring for DUI. I havent been charged with anything yet, but I’m wondering, will this arrest show up in my background check if employers run one? My lawyer seemed to not really know.

I worked a few months when I was 19, then I moved in with my fiance, and was basically a "homemaker", as he did not want me to work. I just handle housekeeping, cooking, paying bills, running errands. This was 10 years ago, and in the past 10 years I have been a homemaker. The only job i’ve had is "self employment" (babysitting and cleaning houses). I did take a temp job for a couple months back in 2006. Other than that, and the job I hate in ’99, nothing worth putting on an application. (Had a couple convenience store jobs over the years, but not long lasting, due to only having one car and having conflict with HIS hours.)

We now have a second vehicle, and I am DESPERATE to get a job outside the home! LOL

At least one place I am applying with does at extensive background check, including employment history and credit check.

Can they verify the length of time you were employed with a company, and the EXACT dates? I called the restaurant I worked at back in ’99 to get the exact dates of hire and leaving, but they say they do not keep records past a few years. So, i’m not sure what the date were! Will the companies doing the background checks be able to find the info even so? If I just guess that the dates, will that look horrible?

Also, any advice as to how I should explain the huge employment gaps.

I applied for a job yesterday that required a background check. I was wondering if jobs I had before I turned 18 will come up? I don’t have anything to hide, but I didn’t list one of the jobs I had in high school because the experience I gained there didn’t pertain to the job I was applying for and there were only 4 spaces to list previous work experience so I chose to write down the places that were more like the job I was applying for. I just don’t want the potential new employer to think that I’m hiding something because I didn’t list it… if I had that job when I was 17 (started the job and quit the job when I was 17) will it come up on a background check? I’m 20 years old now, so it’s within 7 years…

Background checks also show previous employment history. Depending on what type of background check is being conducted. I got the impression from the paperwork I filled out that it’d be check both criminal history and my employment history.

I did a Google search for my name to see what popped up. There wasn’t much, but I came across background check site that had my name and said something like "get a full background and report on this person for .95) I understand jobs, banks, landlords, etc do background/credit checks, but can any joe blow off the street buy it to find out information about me? This is hard to believe for me. I’ve talked to a few law students today and they told me that there’s really no way I could’ve failed a background check.

Are they checking to see if you are some sort of pedophile or sicko or are they looking into your driving record, i.e. dui’s, reckless driving, etc. and how far back are they going to check? If a US citizen travels to another country (Canada or Mexico) and runs into trouble with the law in that country, can the criminal records follow to hurt that person when he/she are back to the USA?

For example:
- Problems getting good jobs in the USA?
- Problems traveling to another country (not the same country which the crime occured)?
- While in USA, if that person is asked about the criminal records, does he/she have to say anything about the records occured outside the USA?

I recently just got hired 3 weeks ago by a temporary employer, but the job I wanted at Verizon had called me and we had a phone interview. They do employment verification background checks, and I tried to give them all the jobs I had in the last seven years. I didn’t give them the new job I just got 3 weeks ago. I’m finishing my bachelor’s degree in Political Science, which leaves my job search open ended. I am worried about graduation because of two things:
1. In effort not to divulge too much information, I’ll just say I have a condition that a background check would surely reveal. It would definitely bar me from employment and is not a status that is federally protected from discrimination.
2. In remedying my condition, I’ve had to work for around the clock between two jobs to pay for medical treatment(not covered by insurance at all) which has driven my grades into the ground. Even though I’ll graduate, my transcripts aren’t anything to proudly display.

I don’t think I could ever hope to work for a selective organization but am wondering if there are any specific industries that tend to be lax in their employment practices. I’m feeling pretty hopeless and would consider anything.

Hi, a buddy of mine is concerned about his recent arrest for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He received a conditional discharge for the offenses and was told by his lawyer that he could apply to jobs and continue to state he has never been convicted of a crime. However, he still remains concerned as he is in the process of applying for a job and is worried that a background check will be a deal breaker for him. Does anyone know or have any experience with this scenario? Any thoughts will help.

now i’d like to know what do i do when appyling for jobs. from my understanding is that these charges will still be on my record but will say "dismissed" since it was expunged. but does that mean i can answer "no" on applications?

had several interviews, filled out paperwork, background check consent forms, ect and after that i never get a call back from them. when i call to follow up they say the position has been filled which i think is bs and unprofessional of them not to call back and at least let the person know whats going on.

anyway i was fired from my last job for lying on my application and i dont want to make the same mistake twice. so what is the best way to approach this. any advice will be greatly appreciated thanks.
The word most employers use is "convicted" which by definition means that i was found guilty. i was found guilty but the record says "dismissed" still a little confused about that.

the position was temp-to-hire so after 6 months of temp work. they decided they liked me and wanted to make me permanent. i filled out another application from the company not from the temp agency and that is where i answered "no" that i was never convicted
sorry forgot to add one more thing. even though they are EOE that doesn’t mean they won’t lie and say the position has been filled or never call you back. like you said they dont have to hire anyone they dont want to

i recently applied to a place, got an interview, and the interview went well. now.. at the end of the interview, the assistant manager said he was going to do a background check.. now at my previous jobs.. a background check usually meant i was hired.. but the assistant manager hasnt said that i was hired yet! BUT he did say i will see you soon and i’ll be getting another phone call.. now.. for the background check.. i got fired from both my previous jobs.. but on the application i put in a job that i never worked at but put in my friend because he was a manager for that place. will the background check have the previous jobs in it?

Hi – I was laid off from my job almost a year ago. It’s very tough out there and I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs. I went through my savings, assets, etc and coming down to the wire. Even with a college degree, the only place that offered me a position is at Blockbuster as store manager. I don’t care where, I just need a job ASAP. I was offered the position pending the background check. She said it would take about three days. It’s been five days now and I still haven’t heard anything.

So my questions is, what type of background check does BBV do? I have a clean criminal history. My credit is pretty shaky due to the lack of funds the past year. My former employee is a little peeved at me for claiming and winning an unemployment claim. I have been working at my current job for close to two months and they just informed me that their is an employment discrepancy on my background check and I would need to submit more info for them to complete the background check.

When I applied for this job I was asked to complete a background check with employment verification. While doing the employment verification I didn’t know the exact dates for previous jobs so I took a wild guess. Now two months later the company is asking me to submit a W-2 or paystub to show that I worked the dates that I stated. They contacted the company and it shows that I worked for that company but the dates that I submitted were off by a few months of the actual date.

Can they terminate my employment because the dates don’t match up? They have proof that I worked at that particular job but they want me to verify that I worked the dates that I stated. What should I do?

I submitted a background check only, I didnt’ list all the jobs I’ve ever had. Someone told me that companies can only check what you put on the background check about jobs. I have great credit, no criminal record, never failed a drug test. Is there a possibility I might fail the background check?

I have an active warrant (3 months now) for unpaid speeding ticket and a B theft conviction from January of this year. My DARS (govt agency that helps place people with disabilites in jobs) caseworker has run a background check on me and is saying that nothing is showing up on it. I had to go with my friend to her court case because she got a ticket for retail theft. She does not want to apply for jobs because she’s worried it will show up on her background check. She’s 17, and has heard that her youth file doesn’t get sealed until she’s 18.
Does it show up as a crime on her background check information?
And is that true about her file not being able to be sealed until she’s 18?

One evening a woman who I never met or knew knocked at my door and said derogatory comments about me for not paying my rent, I told her I had visitors and it had nothing to do with her, she said “I am the landlords wife”. I went to go back into my house and she grabbed my wrist causing scratches, I pulled her hand off my wrist and she fell to the ground. (there were no real injuries to her or me) She called the police to have me arrested for assault so I called the police too for her assault on me. NOTHING HAPPENED no Police ever came.

Three weeks later the Police did come to arrest me for assault and to search my house for forged passports that the Landlord told them I had. (he lied) they took me to the station and took statements about the assault on the Landlords wife, bailed me for 1 month on police bail. Nobody took up my complaint about her assaulting me despite me complaining 2 times to Police, on the 3rd time at a different station they took my statement about her assaulting me. (this was 7 weeks after the assault)

My bail was up today and the Police Woman left a message that I should meet her so for the result from the Crown Prosecution service. She never showed up and left a note saying to come back in 1 more month pending investigations. She takes 1-2 weeks to return phone calls and if you miss her call she will not call again so I have to wait anoth 1-2 weeks. I have never been in trouble with The police In my life.

I also Have 2 jobs pending a CRB check (criminal background check) as I work with vulnerable Adults so this Police Woman is ruining my career by her mistreatment and incompetence. Who do I need to complain to about the way I have been treated.

I can’t believe that the Police never showed up and three weeks later expect to complete a full investigation long after the fact.

I think she is racist as I am from America and I am Black.

The accuser got preferential treatment and the Police are not professional or timely for such a trifling matter that was just a spat. When do I turn in my notice to my old employer? Should I wait until the background check is complete, or does the new employer expect me to start right away? (I dont want to turn in my notice, and then get turned away from the new employer, and be out of 2 jobs) How does the hiring process usually work for large corporations? I am having a background check done but on my resuem to close gaps I put 3 months instead of 2, or put a job I worked in the fall as being my job in the summer…will this effect anything I thought a background check more or less verified I have held the jobs on my resume and wasn’t fired or anything. I’m mostly clean apart from one thing – about a year ago my friends and I were spotted by security guards looking through bins – we go around collecting discarded objects to use in art projects. The security call the police, the police stop & search us, I still have the receipt for the search – it says they were looking for evidence of theft/burglary and nothing was found. Hi, I graduated not too long ago majored in Criminal Justice. I am applying to work with a local police department in a clerical/administrative setting, after working at my college’s police dept. I understand that a thorough background investigation will be completed, with polygraph, psych exam, and the like. I am rather intimidated by the process.
Here are my questions:
–If I have made it to a round of cuts, would it be premature to think that I might be hired? if so, since I am currently unemployed, should I go about looking for other jobs? I do need the money.
–How long do you think the background check will take? As long as for an officer?
–If I have tried drugs before, not used regularly, how do I answer and explain that with the polygraph? (Just marijuana and X twice, over five years ago–unsucessfully too, I didn’t know what I was doing). Do you think I will be held to the same stringent qualifications as a regular LE officer?

Hello i have quite a good educational background, however, when i was younger i got into a lot of trouble and now have quite an extensive criminal record. As a result i have only had dead end jobs and i am sick of it. Is there any way i could get a decent career minded job?

I have a civil judgement against me that I paid in full 4 months after the judgement. It’s been a little over year now and I was able to get the judgment deleted from my credit report(all three bureaus too). Also, the judgement was in a different state, I have since moved to a new state, and applying for jobs in my current state. Will this civil judgement show up on my background check?

Honest, hard working people, waiting to start jobs in hospitals, care homes and schools etc., are being kept from these vital positions because the "police" are too idle to take the time to check out their possible criminal backgrounds on which these people now need clearence in order to start work!

I read on numerous websites that i could go to any police department and for a fee could get a background check on myself. Unfortunately, I tried this and several policemen emphatically told me that it is illegal for them to do background checks on anyone who is not a criminal. Now, I know a certain jobs in the US require background checks, but in these cases the employer provides a fingerprint form. How can I get a check that the Korean government will accept?

i have a few convictions on my record when i was a youth.
its been nearly 5 years since my last conviction, all my charges i pleaded guilty to, my convictions are:
2x burglary & theft (dwelling)
1x theft from a motor vehicle
1x failer to surrender to custody at appointed time
& 1x breach of community & rehabilitation order

and since my last conviction ive worked a couple of jobs and been to college.

I’m interested in a job that says they do a prior employment background check. I need to know what info will come up for me. I have had quite a few jobs and don’t remember the exact start/end dates for all of them. I don’t want to put incorrect info on the job application and then have them disqualify me for the position because of incorrect dates. What can I do to get this info?
