I used to be an assistant manager at a private store that sold clothing, and sporting equipment. It was a small business. I worked there for 7 years. Would this show up on my background check for a new job? The company has bin long closed cause another company bought it in 2008. Will any info of this company be available to prove my employment, n held position there? Should I even leave this on my resume?

1) How precise are companies when it comes to background checks? For example, if I was off a month when I did my employment dates for a certain position, would this be considered a ‘red flag’ to denial? (I simply ask because I am not 100% certain on the timeframe, and simply entered what I had typically used in my Resume. However I am unsure whether it was that month, or the next that my employment began.)
2) Are grades a reason for people to be denied employment? I included a semester of college in my background check wherein my grades were admittedly abysmal. Could this potential destroy my chance of being hired? (I didn’t receive any kind of degree, nor did I say I did on my background check information sheet.)
3) Your Opinion::: My background information should be almost exactly accurate, my employment dates (except for the note above) should be right on, along with my competency in the areas that I explained in my Resume. My High School grades were above-average, whilst college was far below average for the semester I was in there. No criminal history either; if a company has gone this far to check my background, what are my chances of employment? ((Unless grades are a HUGE factor when employment is decided.))
Thanks everyone.

hello everyone,
I’ve recently been selected to interview with blue cross blue shield of IL. They went over my resume with me over the phone, I passed the test and did well, now I’m getting interviewed tomorrow. My questions are as follows:
1. will they do a background check after the interview or do you think they’ve already done it?
2. does the background check consist of past employment or just criminal?
3. if i were terminated from a previous job..like 3 jobs ago, will they find out why?
It’s not horribly bad, just wondering. Thank you for any help or advice.
thank you shon for confirming my beliefs

I just graduated college and am currently applying to a variety of jobs; some of which are government jobs which I’m positive will do an employment background check. I currently work for my dad’s business, which is a branch of a bigger organization. He compensates me buy paying all of my bills. Because of this, in an employment background check of the organization, my name would not show up. Should I include that I’m working for my dad’s business on a resume? And how would I go about doing so professionally?

I have got a job offer and now they are going to perform background check. Its not at all a problem, I have a very clean one. But the concern is when I submitted my resume, in the employment history I mentioned everything, every detail about where I worked, period of employment. But in the background check form, I missed one of the employers from history, because I left that company because of some issues with my supervisor. So far what I have mentioned in the background check form would come out well and positive. But will the employer/HR compare background check reports with the resume to see if I missed any employer in the background verification. Please help….

I just applied for a position. The people called me back about my resume stating they were very interested in me for potential employment.
However, I noticed a mistake on my resume. For my current employment, I started in July of 2004 and I must not have been thinking correctly or made a typo or something because on my resume it states 2003. I didn’t deliberately lie about it, but I was too afraid to correct the woman when she said "Wow! So you’ve been there since 2003!" I didn’t want them to think I made frequent mistakes on my typing or anything.
I’m paranoid because I really want this position, but I’m afraid a background check of my employment history will reveal the mistake and they might take it for a lie and not hire me.
Will a background check reveal this date or will it just confirm that I did, in fact, work there?

I have 4 driving tickets on my record, one for not stopping completely before turning on a red light, one for merging out of a right-turn-only lane, one for driving HOV, and one for running a red light.
I also fudged alittle on my resume, for a position I put "Intern" instead of "Summer Associate."
For my references, I put a co-worker down, but I never really worked directly with him, we worked in different departments.
Will this make me fail my pre-employment background check?
I do not have a criminal record, have never been arrested.
They’re not checking my credit history. They’re checking my education, employment (past 7 years), driving records, and criminal records.
The job is an Accounting position.
The company gave me a sheet of paper that had a bunch of items of a background screening and specifically checked what they were going to check. Credit history was not checked off. But it doesn’t matter anyway, i have a good credit history.
I told me co-worker about it, and he knows what to say as my reference.

I was 17years old and with my friends and we shopliftied . We were in another state from which we live. I went to court and had to pay a fine. I just had a interview with this company and I know they are going to do a back ground check. I live in a different state from were i shoplifted. I did a background check for my state and nothing came up but when I went to the state where I was arrested It came up as a misdeanor. The job I have applied for is located in another state but they are going to open a office where I live. I just want to know if they will be able to see the shoplifting on my record? Do you think they will check just my state or all over?
It happened in 2003
The company only has my resume and they have’t asked me to fillout a application yet but I went online and the application doesn’t mention anything about background checks. When i was arrested they didn’t send me to a juvinele jail so does that mean I was charged as an adult. IT happened in the state of Georgia

Okayyy so this is a first job kind of thing for me and im only 16. So i applied at winn dixie grocery stores about four weeks ago, and thn three days later i showed up with a resume and the big manager insantly liked me so he got me into an interview tht same day with the hiring manager and she instantly liked me too and tht same day she basically told me i got the job. Sent me too get drug tested (pee in a cup) at labcorp, and then to come back on a few days later to put my name in the system for the background check. So she said theyll give me a call. Two weeks passed by and theyhadnt called so i gae her a call. And since she had been on vacation she had just strted working tht same day , theyve been really busy bcuz they are remodeling and hiring, and she told me ht labcorp for sone reason still had me pending with about six other people and tht she was going to call me though. So its been a little over a week and she stil hasnt called me back . I free of any drugs ( except for a prescription drug tht i havent even tken i a while ) and my background check is clean. I took midol the day of the drug test tho. So but idk. Its been a while? What should i do?????

I’ve been unemployed for 4 months now. I just interviewed for a position at a medium-sized sales company for an operations manager role. The interview went well; this is the job I always wanted! Anyway, the manager e-mailed me and asked me what the dates of my past employment were. I didn’t add that to my resume because the longest job I’ve held was for about 1 1/2 years!
I have tons of experience; I know I’m really qualified, as I’ve done similar roles in my past. I really WANT this job! How should I reply?
Lastly, when a company does a background check, what is your past employer allowed to reveal to the inquirer?
Thanks for your help!

I have recently gone through an interview process and been offered a new job. My only concern is around the background check. I have no criminal record or history, but I did leave a previous job for undisclosed reasons, and have signed an NDA as a part of that severance. All I can say on that matter is that there was no malfeasance on my part, but I am still worried about what might come up when the background check is done.
I even have my direct manager from that job listed as a reference. I was a very good employee there, and she will say excellent things about me. But if they contact the HR department, I do not know what will be communicated. Can anyone offer expert insight as to how that all works? Thanks!
I worked for this previous employer for 6 years. That job was a significant part of my professional experience and qualification. So it is on my resume, and prospective employers will know that I worked there. So, knowing that, my question is about what the HR department legally can and likely will tell them about my dismissal, and not about whether they’ll find out that I worked there at all.

We are working on finding a great babysitter. I am leery as my kids have never been watched my non-family. I’ve read all these articles stating you should do a background check, but if we get a 13-16 year old do we need to? I’m new at this so any and all help is greatly appreciated..
I just want to add some things. I’m a VERY over-proptective mom and the whole idea of getting a babysitter is making my stomach ache. But, I don’t have a choice as my parents who both work full time, have stated they don’t want to watch the kids more than once every six months, plus they are moving 10 hours away soon. The only other option is my sister, and she has 2 of her own kids who are a HANDFUL themselves, so I practically have to force her to watch mine. And I don’t want to place my kids with someone who doesn’t even want to be watching them. I am planning on starting with this.
1) Phone interview
2) meet at coffee shop, or 3rd party location and have them bring along parents or just mom
3) meet at their home for second interview
4) meet at the zoo with my husband, kids
5) have her over while we are home
I’m DEFINITELY getting a nanny cam. one upstairs, one down.
I’m also asking for 4 references along with a resume of other families she’s cared for.

i have an interview next week and the company i am interviewing with conducts background checks before extending offers of employment.
how extensive are these background checks? are they mainly just checking criminal / financial records? if so, no problem.
i am just a little worried because i fudged the dates of a job i had 4 years ago to eliminate gaps of employment on my resume. do i have anything to worry about?
PS: the two companies which i fudged the dates of employment for have since dissolved, if that helps.
and my current job which i’ve had for 4 1/2 years is accurate on my resume.

If you have been fired from a job after being there barely 2 months and leave it off the resume and job application, does it show up on a background check? What if you are also collecting unemployment benefits?
Is it OK to leave the job off the resume since one doesnt want to delve into the negatives?

I am a recent college graduate and just got offered an awesome job and was wondering if previous employment is included on background checks. I held SEVERAL summer jobs some which I actually forgot about. Well I filled out this form and sent it out then remembered some other places that I worked. I am unable to go back to correct this information and am simply wondering if past employment is included or do they simply check the references i provided on my resume.
I am simply curious. I have worked many jobs in the past that did background checks but didn’t seem to acknowledge that I left out these summer jobs. I am just a little anxious considering I just landed my dream job and didn’t bother to mention my past summer employment.
FYI. I have seen similiar questions and they vary, covering two different extremes. Either it doesn’t matter what you put on an application as long as you worked there and it is relevant to the job for which you applied or not putting all work history will be looked upon as dishonesty.

I worked at a business for aproximately 2 months and left for various reasons. Do to the fact that I worked there for such a short time I have chosen not to list that particular job on my resume (which I know is fine to do) but to not list it on an application is omission. Even though that particular job is not listed doesn’t mean they can’t find out. My main two part question is can a future employer find out AND if so how? I am interested in knowing methods OTHER THEN checking my credit report.

i’ve recently landed on my dream job. i was pretty much got the offer on the spot but waiting for the checks now. but just a little bit worry /paranoid about the checks:
5 years ago, i submit my 2 wks notice after i got a firm offer from another place, and my boss’s boss went crazy. She walked me out the same day and accused me stealing ( i DID NOT and explained to her very clearly). i am kind of worry if she would fabricate something bad and add to my profile, and scare away my new company.
also, i hold 2 position at this company, and i only put one title on my resume, so the title probably won’t match when the verifier calls. would this be a problem?? My title is Business Analyst and i was doing Sr. BA’s work, and moved to a totally different department and served my last year. but i only put down Sr. Business Analyst in my resume…..
could this possibly hurt me? thanks a ton….

I contracted for a modeling agency for two years and filed 1099 tax forms for this contracted employment. I would prefer to not list this employment on my resume because it does 80% of its business as legit modeling work and 20% adult modeling work. Can background checks find out who you were employed by if you don’t list the previous employers on your resume. For instance, could the background check make the link between filing the 1099 forms and the employment with the modeling agency?

I’m applying for a job and I left out my previous job on my resume and application.
My question is how is it possible for that job to show up on a background check if I never included it on any public documents (such as credit card applications, or any other job applications, etc). The only record of my last job was in my 2007 income tax return and that is "technically" information not available to the public – including private investigation firms.
What are the chances that an employee background check will catch this exlcusion?
Thanks!

I checked off "no" when it asked "had I been fired from any job." It was a job I had 8 years ago and was there for less than a year, in a different career, and not listed on my resume or job application. At the time I weighed the slim possibility of this coming to light vs. the possibility of excluding myself from the search. Could they find out about a job that old if I didn’t list it? I know that employment checks usually go back seven years, and during that time I was not fired anywhere. How would they even find out the circumstances of my leaving without being told about it from them, and wouldn’t past employers be hesitant to release that information anyway?
PLEASE, serious answers only, I’m kind of nervous about this and figuring out what to do.

Hello, I was just offered a very nice job working for a Telecom company baring a drug screening and background check. My most recent employer was a friend of my fathers and he paid me "under the table" for the 6 months I worked for him. I did not disclose this on my application (because it was not asked). The background check company says that it verifies employment/education/criminal history etc… Am i gonna be OK?? If they call my former boss he will totally vouch for me, but i am still very worried as this job pays nearly twice what every other job I am looking at right now does. Please let me know what you think.
I think you misunderstood me. I did put the job on my application and on my Resume, but if they try to confirm my employment using tax records, it isnt going to show up.

I had an interview to a bank and they said the background check may take about a week. I have worked at various places and some are very irrelevant to my resume, so I left them out. In place of that, I added a few months to one of my employment places and I’m wondering if once they run the background check, they will see me as a liar? This is a different bank I worked for about 3 or 4 years ago. Do you think this will affect my chances of getting the job? This is what a background check is for right? To verify employment?

Does anyone know of a website to do a self background check. I’m in the process of getting an interview and they are going to use "Kroll" to run a background check on me. The last time a company did a background check on me caused me my opportunity to get a job because I did not add an employer on my application. I only worked for that employer for like 7 days so I’m pretty sure everyone can agree that it does not make sense to add that on an aplication. With that being said, is there a website that provides the same services as Kroll, including employment verification? I know my dates are off and I want to fix that so I can get hired. Please if anyone knows of a website please let me know. I want to be able to see what they see and make the appropriate modification on my resume. Please anyone, my future depends on it!!!!!!!!

I have a strong resume in my field; however, most of my work experience was volunteer / unpaid and thus would not appear in my tax / federal history. I’d rather not mention that my experience was unpaid unless I am asked because I don’t want to be taken any less seriously. Do employers really do a thorough background search even for a basic administrative position? I was offered a position which I start tomorrow. Does it really allow them to check my work history against my resume? I thought they were strictly to see if I was a felon or had a bad driving record or had done drugs. Also, would they go through the w-2 filing process before a check?

If I exaggerated my employment on my resume by saying it was a few months longer than it really was, will this show up on my employment background check? Will it necessarily get me rejected from the position?
