The US embassy came to see me when I got arrested for DUI in Tijuana. They got my name and social security number, adress and everything. I was "let-off-the-hook" because it was my first time being arrested in Mexico and I was warned that if it happened again that I would be charged. Will this show up on my criminal record? Affect my chances of joining?

I would highly advise to tell your recruiter about this. He can search for it. If the US Embassy came to see you it is documented. You can most likely just get a waiver because the end result required no further legal action. They might not have documented it as a dui so I strongly advise to tell your recruiter because if they miss it in the beginning if you pick a job that requires a security clearance they will find it and they will send your butt packing. You will just have to make a written statement and its not a big deal considering you are telling the truth.

If you were not charged, there was no trial, it will not show up.

if you had an embassy official spring you, then the FBI has a record of that. but you were not charged, so what’s the problem?

Put it on your background information. It is not going to effect your joining up. But here is where NOT listing it could bite you – when you go for security clearances.
When they do a security clearance background investigation, they ask you for three people to interview about you. They then ask those three people for three more names. They ask those nine people for 3 names. They may not get 27, and they may not get around to interviewing all 39 people – but they will wind up interviewing a lot of people – some of whom may not be all that close to you.
They are going to ask them all kinds of questions – including if you have ever been in trouble with the law. Are you willing to bet that nobody that they talk to knows about the arrest? If you lie about it on your application and they find out, it will make it really difficult for you to get a security clearance – and you are going to spend a lot of time answering embarassing questions to the MI investigators.
Tell them the truth – you got drunk in TJ and were arrested and released. No big deal. You think you are the first guy that wanted to join the army that ever got busted in TJ? As long as it isn’t something you do frequently, or a cover for a more serious crime, they are going to pass over that like it doesn’t mean anything.
By the way – they are probably going to find out about you getting in trouble in school, that fight you were in in middle school, the time you set the firecracker off in your neighbor’s mailbox, etc. It is amazing the level of information these investigations come up with.
